TW: blood, pain, more stabbing so gore, death, and main character death (don't worry, he gets better). Wow this is a long chapter, sorry about that

"This is the location Ethan sent us," Roman said, driving through a wheat field.

"So where are they?" Patton asked, holding one of his angel blades tight. He had given his other one to Logan since the teacher insisted on coming.

"I don't know, Remus and Janus are on the roof so if anyone is going to see them it's those two."

"Are you sure that's safe?" Logan asked from the back.

"They're both demons, they're not going to get hurt if they fall off. Besides, I'm more worried about Virgil. Who knows what Alice has done to him al-"

Roman punched the breaks, making Remus and Janus fall off of the roof. But no one was worried about them because of the same reason Roman had stopped the car.

Part of the field, not too far away from them, bursted into purple flames.

"Oh no," Patton whispered. "What... what happened?"

Remus threw the car door open. "Found him!"

Roman grabbed him and pulled him into the back, Janus quickly following. Roman hit the gas hard, making everyone hit the back of their seats as he drove towards the column of flames.

It took only a few minutes and Roman swerved the car to a stop right before they ran in.

Patton jumped out of the car and ran towards it, before he could take a single step in, someone pulled him back.

"Patton are you crazy!" Logan shouted. "You can't run into there, you'll burn to a crisp!"

"Virgil's in there! He could be hurt!"

"VIRGIL!" Roman shouted at the top of his lungs. Demons couldn't enter in the fire either, the only one who could touch this kind of fire without burning is Lucifer and now Virgil.

But strange enough, standing next to the fire didn't burn. Roman reached out and let his hand go through the flame.

"Roman!" Remus shouted, pulling his hand out of the fire. He stared at Roman in worry before noticing Roman's hand wasn't burned. "What the..."

"It won't hurt me. He won't hurt me," Roman realized.

He took a deep breath and stuck his arm in, the fire was warm and it almost tickled. But he could feel Virgil's pain, something bad had happened.

"I'm going in, stay here," Roman said, before turning back to the fire and rushing in.

The wheat in the fire had burned to a crisp, and it was unlikely that the ground there would ever grow anything again. But the fire still remained harmless to Roman.

He heard sobbing coming from somewhere and followed the sound, squinting for any sign of Virgil.

"Virgil!" he called, but the sound of the fire drowned his voice out. "VIRGIL!"

He followed the sound of Virgil's cries and felt another wave of pain and sadness wash over him. The demon stumbled slightly as tears came to his eyes, turning into steam the moment they trailed down his cheeks.

After walking further into the fire, he finally found Virgil. He was holding on tight to someone who laid limp in his arms... and wings.

Roman was frozen, he didn't know whether he should mourn whoever they lost, or be shocked at the black feathery wings that had sprouted from Virgil's back and the halo that hung over his head.
