TW: fighting and blood

"Okay, wait so- wait," Roman stammered, confused about the math homework they were assigned. Both Roman and Virgil were in the library, waiting for the school bell to ring so they can go to first class. "Alright I'm confused, what was the formula again?"

"Um... I think it's pi times radius squared times height," Virgil told him. "Come on, this is only the first week! Mrs. Macduffee is the worst, and the notes aren't that helpful."

"We're going to need to make cheat sheets to pass her class."

"I'm not looking forward to her class."

"First period though, so we just go to hers and then the rest of the day is easy sailing."

"Until science, Mr. Croft seems to be a hard teacher too."

"Yeah but he seems easier to talk to for help. I'm sure he wouldn't mind talking to us after class if we need anything. Besides, it's science not math."

"Man, I feel cheated. It's the end of the first week and this was the week you had to do both of our homework."

"The deal was one week! Besides, the only class we don't have each other in is Spanish and you can always ask moi for any help."

"That's French."

"I have many special talents."

"Okay, say a whole sentence in French then."

Roman thought for a moment, "Um, oui?"

"Doesn't count, but hey if you can do Spanish just fine then I don't care."

"Entonces no hay problema." (Then no problem.)

"Wait, what does entonces mean again?"

"'Then.'"

"Right, I'm so gonna fail that class."

"You'll do fine, I believe in you." Roman poked Virgil on the nose.

Virgil waved Roman's hand away. "You're a dork." The bell rang. "Alright, we have to get to first class. Let's go."

"Yay, Friday! Let's get this over with." Roman gave Virgil his homework and put his own away in his backpack before swinging it on his back.

On the way to class they passed Justin. He didn't do anything except glare at the two of them, reminding them that he hasn't forgotten, and Virgil felt Roman put his arm around his shoulder.

Virgil smiled a bit, he knew Justin couldn't do anything while Roman is around. And Virgil wouldn't let Roman get hurt either.

With the shopping bag in hand, Virgil started walking back towards the bus stop. Patton had to go into work today to cover for a coworker and Virgil didn't want to bother Roman, so he decided to visit a small thrift shop on his own.

It was a nice place, pretty small but it had some nice trinkets and clothing. He found some things for Patton, a nice shirt for himself, and he decided to get a bracelet that he thought Roman would like. It had black beads and some rainbow ones alternating.

He was glad that there was a bus stop just a street away from his house, now he just had to memorize the times. But the next bus should be coming in just ten minutes, hopefully it won't be terribly late.

Virgil just wanted to go home, get a snack and maybe take a nap. But of course, the universe had different plans.

"Hey brat!" Virgil felt someone grab his arm and spin him around roughly.

Justin gripped his arm with an ugly smile on his face. He had two friends behind him with even uglier faces.

Virgil sent him a glare and tried to pull his arm out of Justin's grip, but he held on tight.

"What do you want, jerk," Virgil growled.

"I just want a talk, why don't I introduce you to my friends?" Justin led him into a nearby alley.

Alarms were going off in Virgil's head. Alleys, especially dead end alleys like this one, were always bad news.

"Look, you all seem nice but I'm going to miss my bus if I don't leave now-" Virgil tried to reason but Justin pushed him against the wall. His head hit it hard, making his mind go fuzzy for a moment. He was getting really tired of being pushed around.

Justin laughed, "Man is it my lucky day, I'm so happy I ran into you. I told you I would get back at you."

"Right, because you need your friends with you to get me while I'm all alone. That's kind of weak, isn't-" Virgil was cut off by a fist to his stomach. He almost doubled over, but Justin's friends grabbed his arms and shoulders and pinned him against the brick wall as Justin continued to deliver blows.

Virgil struggled to at least protect his face, but he wasn't strong enough to pull his hands out of their grips. Justin grabbed him by his hair and brought Virgil's head down against his knee, letting him fall to the ground.

Virgil curled up the best that he could, feeling blood already gushing out of his nose. He really hoped that wasn't broken.

He kept his arms around his head for protection, feeling every kick on his back or ribs. He couldn't breathe, his stomach hurt and it felt like he was going to throw up. It felt like he was going to die, was he going to die?! How would Patton feel? Would Roman know what happened?

Leaving those two behind made Virgil feel guilty, he remembered seeing Patton look so broken at Anna's funeral. No, he wouldn't do that to Patton, he wouldn't let him cry over another family member, not even over a scratch.

Something in Virgil's chest burned, it was painful but he knew it wasn't any injury caused by the three idiots above him. He knew it was coming from inside him, it belonged to him and it was his power to use.

"ENOUGH!" Virgil shouted, feeling the energy release from him. He wasn't sure what he expected, but something exploded around him and all the blows stopped.

He looked up to see the three jerks were all pushed away from him, slightly singed somehow. He pushed himself up on wobbly legs and stumbled to the wall behind him as the other three kids seemed to stir and get up.

If he passed out here, he wouldn't be able to protect himself from them. And they were probably even angrier than before because of whatever just happened.

Luckily, right before he passed out he heard a familiar and friendly voice call out his name.
