June 17th Tompkins House (Maddie's POV)-

"What are you doing here?" I looked up to see my mother with a large basket in her arms.

"Why are you here? Shouldn't you be at work?" I asked.

"Honey I've been home for a week but you haven't been here often enough to see me." All week? That hasn't happened in years.

"Really? Why have you been home?" Have I really not noticed.

"Your father and I have been thinking about staying home to spend more time with you for a while and the company is in a place where we felt comfortable leaving for a bit." She said sitting down beside me.

"You guys actually took off work to spend time with me?" It felt like work always came first, so this was a huge surprise.

"Yes, honey. Now, I stay with you today and we are gonna have a family dinner and movie night."

"Are you serious?!" I couldn't help but show the excitement on my face.

"Yes. Now what would you like to do today?" She asked.

"Ooo can we go get ice cream?" I asked excitedly.

"Maddie, it's nine AM. Why would you want ice cream?" She laughed.

"Cause it's good." I shrugged.

"Okay. Let's go, you little weirdo." She ruffled my hair standing up.

"Yes!" I cheered, running to get my shoes.

. . .

"So what's new with you?" She asked, pulling out of the driveway.

"Well not much, school's good, work is good, Chase is good." Mom and I didn't talk very much but I tried to tell her as much as I could without telling her about my other life.

"Chase? Who's Chase?" I blushed realizing that I never told my mom about me and Chase.

"Uhh- My boyfriend?" I said sheepishly.

"Boyfriend?" She asked, she didn't sound mad. "Since when?"

"Four months. I'm sorry I never told you but-" I should've told her but I didn't really think about it before.

"Maddie, honey. I understand we haven't always been there. It's fine. As long as he's a good guy and he makes you happy." I released a breath I didn't realize I was holding on to.

"He's a great guy and he makes me really, really happy." I hummed.

"Yeah? Well I'd love to hear about him." She said.

"Chase is, he's smart and funny. And he's really sweet and cute." She laughed at my gushing.

"He sounds nice, how did you two meet?" I couldn't tell her how we actually met so I need to bend the truth a bit.

"He's Mr. Davenport's son." I knew there'd be follow up.

"His step-son?" Ugh Leo, gross.

"No, his son." I clarified as she pulled up to the ice cream shop's drive through.

"He doesn't have a son Maddie." I could see the worry in her eyes.

"He actually has three kids but they've been in boarding school for most of their lives. They moved back here when Davenport got married." That works.

"Wow. What ice cream do you want?" She asked, pulling through.

"I'll get a chocolate and cookie dough cone, please." I said looking over the menu.
