Mary sat behind the counter. She was really bored. There wasn't anything to do. No one had come in since Jeff had left. She stared at her hands and kept glancing over at the clock.
Suddenly the door opened. Mary jumped. She looked over to see a blonde haired boy with with a black suit on. His jacket was open. She looked down at his shoes and noticed he had walked to the general store by the dirt on his shoes.
"Can I buy paper, envelopes, and stamps?" He asked.
"They're over there," Mary said pointing to a corner of the store.
The young man nodded. He walked to where Mary had pointed and grabbed a package of paper, a package of envelopes, and a book of stamps. He walked back and put them on the counter.
"That'll be seventy-three cents," Mary said.
The young man dug through his pocket for some change. He set a fifty-cent piece on the counter along with two dimes and three pennies. Mary put the coins into the cash register.
Mary noticed that the young man had brown eyes. They were slightly red like he had been crying. Mary frowned as the young man left. She wondered what was wrong. Why had he been crying?
A car drove up. Mary heard the car door shut. Mr. Walker came in. "Who was that young man?" He asked.
"I don't know," Mary said.
Mr. Walker nodded as if in deep thought.
"Can I get off a little early today?" Mary asked Mr. Walker.
"Why?" He asked.
"I have a date at seven and I want to look nice," Mary said.
Mr. Walker smiled. "Today's been pretty slow, why don't you leave now? I'll close up," He said.
Mary smiled. "Thanks Mr. Walker!" She exclaimed as she came around the counter and then she hugged him.
Mr. Walker laughed. He watched Mary rush out of the general store.
Mary ran towards her house which in the middle of town. As she ran she saw the young man that had come into the store for paper, envelopes, and stamps. He was walking towards the hotel.
Soon Mary was at her house. She walked inside. She left her shoes beside the door. Her mother was in the kitchen. "Mary?" She said slightly confused.
"I got off early," Mary said walking to her bedroom.
"Why?" Mary's mother asked.
"I have a date," Mary said shutting her door to get dressed.
Mary looked in her closet and grabbed a red and white striped dress. She put it on then walked to her mirror and looked at herself. She ran her fingers through her hair. Her curls bounced as soon as she pulled her fingers out of them. She tied them back with a red ribbon.
Mary walked out of her room. "Who are you going on a date with?" Her mother asked.
"Jeff Riley," Mary said putting on her shoes.
"Jeff Riley?" Mary's mother repeated.
"You don't know him," Mary said opening and walking out of the door.
"Mary," Mary's mother called out.
Mary had already closed the door and was walking towards the general store. She walked in and looked at the clock. It was only six thirty...
