Jeff was in a hurry. He was changing, getting his hair fixed, and warming up his voice all at the same time. He felt kinda crazy as a lady slicked his hair back. He wasn't even sure where the pants he had been wearing were now. Bobby was already dressed and ready. A few of the other band members were there. They had come earlier on another bus.
Eddie and John were ready before Jeff. John had his saxophone out and was playing it softly, and Eddie was accompanying him with his guitar. Eddie was humming and singing quietly. His voice wasn't quite as pleasing as Jeff's voice, but it had a nice sound. Eddie's voice was a little gruffer than Jeff's. Bobby was watching them with a small smile on his face.
"You two should just start your own band," Bobby said. "You sing together enough for it."
John stopped playing for a moment. "I couldn't do that," He said. "Jeff wouldn't know what to do without me."
"Yeah, sure," Jeff shouted.
Finally, Jeff was all dressed. His hair was fixed just in the right way. He looked at his watch. It was almost time for his band to perform. He didn't know where Mary had gone. He had lost her in all the commotion. That was alright, though. He'd find her after the concert.
"You guys have one minute," Someone shouted.
John and Eddie and Bobby stood up. Jeff smiled. It was almost time. The entire band walked out to the screaming crowd.
Mary was waiting in the bus. She had been in there for a few hours. The guards had already refuse her entrance to the concert since she had no money and no ticket. She had her arms wrapped around her legs. She had her chin rested on her knees. She yawned slightly. She was bored and sleepy.
Mary could hear the screams and shouts from inside the concert hall. It made her want to be in there with them. She thought of how she had never been to a concert before because of how small and nameless her town was.
Mary was starting to get a little light headed so she stepped out of the bus for a little fresh air. She didn't hear anymore screaming from the concert hall. It seemed like people were leaving the hall. A group of teenage boys were walking around the concert hall. She realized she was pretty far from the bus. The boys started walking towards her.
Mary tried to retreat towards the bus, but she didn't have time to reach it. The boys surrounded her. She could smell alcohol on their breathes. They were saying things in a drunken slur that only they seemed to understand.
Mary heard shouting. She tried to see over the heads of the teenage boys, but she was too short. Some of the boys turned and through them she saw Jeff. She felt some relief as she boys began to walk away from her. She ran towards Jeff. She could feel herself tearing up. She hugged Jeff. Tears were now running down her face. He patted her head and shushed quietly.
Jeff walked Mary towards the bus. He started to regret slightly taking her along. She wasn't used to what happened in a city, and honestly she seemed scared of it. When they were in the bus Mary seemed a lot less scared. She has stopped crying, but she was still quite shook up.
Mary and Jeff sat down in the seat that they had sat in on the way to the concert hall. John, Bobby, and Eddie got on the bus after Mary and Jeff. Jeff checked his watch.
It was twelve, midnight.
