Bobby woke up. The sun was shining into the room. Mary was laying beside him. Her eyes were closed. She was sleeping so peacefully, and he didn't want to wake her. He rolled off the hotel bed trying to avoid disturbing his wife. He thought about how Odette might wake up and cry and decided to take Odette out with him for a walk.
Bobby picked up Odette's basket, with Odette in it, and walked out the door. It was a nice day. It was very clear. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. Odette continued to sleep despite the bright sun. Bobby decided to go and get some breakfast. He headed towards a bakery he had been to when had first met John and Eddie. When he reached the bakery, he realized it hadn't changed at all. He walked inside.
There was a young lady behind the counter of the bakery. Bobby looked around at everything. It was still very much the same.
Bobby had met John and Eddie here. Eddie was flirting with a young lady behind the counter all those years before. John was there too, but he was pretending he didn't know Eddie because of how embarrassed he was of him. Bobby walked up to the counter to buy a loaf of bread, and Eddie tried to pick a fight with him. Bobby punched Eddie's lights out. John and Eddie were both impressed by Bobby's right hook, and not long after John, Eddie, and Bobby were the closest of friends.
Bobby stared at the lady behind the counter. He tried to remember what type of bread he had bought all those years before. No matter how hard he tried to remember he just couldn't recall what it was. Maybe it was banana bread. He just couldn't remember. What type of bread did Mary like? Banana bread would probably be alright. He was sorta craving it.
"Ma'am, can I have one loaf of banana bread?" Bobby asked.
The young lady behind the counter nodded and turned to the shelf behind her and pulled down a loaf of a brown bread. She wrapped it up in paper to keep it fresh. Bobby smiled and reached into his pocket for some money.
"That'll be a dollar," The lady said.
Bobby's eyebrows raised slightly, but he didn't argue with her. He pulled out a dollar bill and took the carefully wrapped loaf of bread from the lady. He turned to walk out the door. There was a young man at the door.
Bobby stopped and stared. The young man look very familiar. He gave Bobby a funny look as Bobby walked past him. Bobby ran his fingers through his hair and walked out of the door of the bakery.
"I must be seein' things," Bobby said quietly to himself.
Bobby began to walk back towards the hotel. Odette was cooing softly from the basket she had been sleeping in only a few minutes before. Bobby listened to the sounds of the sleepy city. Cars would drive by him and Odette occasionally. The city slowly woke up and went to work.
Bobby reach the hotel and walked up the stairs to his and Mary's room. Bobby opened the door. Mary was still asleep. He set the banana bread down on the coffee table. He sliced himself a piece and munched on it as he waited for Mary to wake up.
Bobby waited for about an hour. The sun was stretched across the room and peering straight into the window. Mary finally began to stir. She lazily sat up. Her mouth opened in a large, wide yawn.
"Good mornin', sweetheart," Bobby said.
"Mornin'," Mary said scratching her scalp. She looked over at him with one eye squinted slightly. She saw the banana bread on the small coffee table. "Is that breakfast?"
Bobby nodded. Mary ran her fingers through her hair to brush it behind her ears. She rubbed her eyes before pushing herself onto the edge of the bed.
"Do you have any coffee?" Mary asked.
"No," Bobby said.
Mary nodded sleepily. She stood up. It was a cold morning. She rubbed her shoulders. She walked to the bathroom. Bobby smiled as the door shut to the bathroom.
Bobby cut himself another slice of banana bread and waited for Mary to get out of the bathroom. The room was quiet. Bobby could hear the water start. Mary was taking a shower.
Odette began to cry so Bobby walked over to her and rocked her gently. She was hungry, but Bobby didn't have anything for her.
"Mommy will be out soon," He said to her quietly. Odette continued to cry.
Mary walked out of the bathroom with her hair up in a towel and her clothes on. Bobby handed her Odette. She sighed and sat down on the bed.
Bobby went into the restroom. He splashed water on his face. He could tell he woke up too early. He was still tired from the drive the day before.
"Bobby, I met someone yesterday that would like to meet you," Mary said.
"Oh," Bobby said popping out of the bathroom.
"I think you might have met him when he was very young," Mary said. "You also were friends with his father."
Bobby frowned slightly. "What are you talkin' about?" He asked.
"You know John's son?"
Bobby nodded slowly.
"I met him yesterday at the cemetery," Mary said.
"Why were you at the cemetery?" Bobby asked.
"I was visiting John's grave," Mary said.
"Why were you doin' that?" Bobby asked.
"I don't know. I just did," Mary said.
Bobby sighed. "When are we supposed to meet him?" He asked.
"I didn't say a specific time," Mary said. "Do you want to go now?"
Bobby frowned and looked at the clock on the wall.
"I guess so," Bobby said.
It was nine thirty.
