Mary smiled at Jeff. He said something about how pretty she was looking. Mary blushed and looked at her feet.
Jeff walked closer to her and held out his arm to her. She took it and they walked out of the general store.
Mr. Walker watched them. He shook his head. Young people these days.
Mary and Jeff walked towards the only restaurant in town. It wasn't far from the general store, nothing was in this small town. The restaurant was the hub of all the youths in the small town. It was the only place in town with a jukebox. The jukebox was constantly playing rock 'n roll hits, and sometimes some kid would get the entire restaurant dancing. The owner, an older man named Mr. Lane, would go out of town once a month to buy new records for the kids' enjoyment. He figured it would boost business to have a few hip records around.
Mary and Jeff walked into the restaurant. Some fast paced piano banging was coming from the jukebox. Mary smiled at the sound of the familiar tune. Jeff smiled slightly at her.
Mary grabbed Jeff's hand and walked him towards a booth. Jeff pulled her arm and brought her into a twirl. Her eyes widened as Jeff smoothly danced with her to the music coming from the jukebox. His lips were curled in a smile. Mary's curls were bouncing, and her lips were widened in a gleeful smile. Jeff danced with her until the song finished then they both broke apart laughing.
Mary and Jeff sat down at a booth. Jeff gestured to a waitress. The waitress walked towards their booth. She had short black hair that was cut around her cheekbones and brown eyes.
"Hi, Mary," The waitress said smiling.
"Hi, Kristina," Mary said glancing up at the waitress.
Kristina looked Jeff up and down. "Who's this?" She asked.
"I'm Jeff Riley," Jeff said flashing Kristina a smile.
Kristina's eyes widened. "No way," She said.
Jeff smiled. "It's true," He said.
Mary watched with some confusion, but tried to hide it.
"You can't be the rock star," Kristina said, "not all the way out here."
Jeff laughed. "Well, I am," He said.
Mary held back a gasp. She knew his name was familiar, but she didn't think he was a rock star. Mary looked over at Kristina. Kristina still looked quite shocked.
"Well, I want a milkshake and a hamburger," Jeff said. He looked over at Mary.
"Oh, I'll have the same," Mary said quickly.
Kristina picked up a notepad and wrote on it quickly. She walked off in a hurry. Jeff smiled at Mary. "It's always nice to meet a fan," He said.
Mary was still lost in thought. She couldn't believe what she had just heard. How had she gotten a date with a rock star?
"Hey, Mary, are you in there?" Jeff asked waving his hand in front of her face.
Mary jumped slightly. "Oh, sorry," She stuttered. "I was... uh... thinking..."
"You know, I'm sorta glad you didn't recognize me when we first met," Jeff said. "It made coming here a whole lot easier."
Mary looked him the eyes. "You knew I didn't recognize you?" She asked.
"Yeah, you aren't very good at hiding surprise," Jeff said smirking at her.
Mary blushed. "I just didn't think you..." She stopped and looked away from him.
Jeff smiled. He touched her hand. "I'm actually really glad," He said.
Mary turned to look at him again. Her blush became even brighter. Someone had put another nickel in the jukebox and another song was playing. Jeff watched as Mary seemed to sink into the music. Her eyes closed as she appreciated the sounds coming from the jukebox.
Kristina was back with their milkshakes and hamburgers. She set them down in front of them. Kristina stayed close for awhile as if there was something she wanted to find out.
Mary touched her milkshake's straw. She pulled her milkshake towards her. Jeff picked up his milkshake and drank some. He looked at Mary. She was still settled in the music. She kept moving her straw to the tune of the music. Her eyes were closed.
Jeff found himself smiling as the song came to an end. Mary's eyes opened to see Jeff smiling at her. She smiled back. "I like that song," She said.
Jeff kept smiling until he took a bite of his hamburger. Mary did the same. They both finished their food and drink.
Mary and Jeff sat together for a little while. They talked and laughed together. Kristina came back and Jeff paid for their food then he and Mary left the restaurant for a walk. The sun was starting to set. Jeff looked at the sunset in awe. He hadn't stopped to pay attention to a sunset in a very long time, and it seemed like the world had saved the most beautiful one for him. Mary smiled at him.
"Oh, it's gonna be dark soon," Jeff said as soon as he pulled his gaze from the setting sun.
"It is," Mary said looking at him.
"I should probably walk you home," Jeff said meeting her gaze.
"Do you have to?" Mary asked. "I don't want to go back yet."
Jeff looked at her for a little while. He pulled a cigarette and lighter from his jacket pocket and lit the cigarette. He put the lighter back and breathed in the cigarette's smoke. He let the smoke billow out of lips.
"This town is nice. It has clean streets, nice people, clear air. If I were to one day settle down, I'd like to settle down in a place like this," Jeff said.
Mary stared at him. "What do you mean?" She asked.
"Oh, I don't know," Jeff said looking out at the hills that the sun was falling behind. "I guess I was just trying to find something to say."
Mary reached for his hand and he let her take it in hers. He breathed in another lungful of his cigarette. He spit the smoke across the horizon. It covered the sun then rose up into the air. Jeff turned to look at Mary again.
"I like you. I really do. I just don't know how I should act around you," He said. "You aren't a big city girl like the girls I usually date. I have to act differently around you."
"Why can't you act like I'm the same?" Mary asked. "Don't you get it? I hate it here. It's stifling. I'm not the prim-proper girl everyone thinks I am. I like rock 'n roll and boys."
Jeff frowned slightly and bit his lip. He breathed in more smoke. "I don't even know what I would do if I was with a big city girl right now... You've got my head all confused," Jeff said and with each word little puffs of smoke appeared.
Mary squeezed his hand slightly. She got closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder. "Take me to your hotel room," She said.
Jeff put his cigarette up to his lips, and he took another breathe. He breathed the smoke out, and it swirled in grey patterns that disappeared with the sunlight. He almost refused, but then he remembered that he had his own room.
"Alright," He said looking at his watch. In the dark he couldn't read it...

(Oh my god, it's writing itself, I swear! I had no idea I could think stuff like this up!)
