(Y/n) woke up on the morning of her birthday to an empty bed and empty apartment. But that was excepted, Joe had left late last night to catch his flight, not bothering to say goodbye. She walked into the kitchen and saw a small red velvet box tied with a white satin bow sitting on the island, a small tag hung off it, (Y/n) picked it up and read.
To my honey,
Happy birthday, don't go too crazy
From JoeIgnoring the patronising note, she opened the box to reveal a shining, very expensive looking diamonds bracelet. It was gorgeous, but just like every year with Joe, it was another piece meaningless high priced jewellery, no thought really, just another pretty thing for her to wear.
Signing she placed the bracelet back in the box and set it aside. She started making herself breakfast when her phone started to ring, it was Steve.
"Hell-"
"Happy birthday to youu, happy birthday to youuu, happy birthday to (Y/n) happy birthday to youuuu" he sang through the phone, making her laugh at his silliness.
"Good morning to you to Steve, how's your day so far?" She asked, taking a sip of her coffee.
"It's going good, what about you? Doing anything special today?"
She snorted lightly "no I think I'll have a quiet day by myself" she thought of the day she had planned for herself and Joe before he told her he was leaving.
She organised for them to have a private tour of the Empire State Building, then a picnic in Central Park while they watch the sunset.
Although they had lived together in New York for years, she wanted to act like tourist for the day, she also wanted this day to be an opportunity to fall in love with Joe all over again, maybe ignite that spark they had lost.
"Trust me, doll, you're not going to have an ordinary day by yourself" Steve hinted excitedly "be ready in 20, I'm coming to get you"
"But Steve-"
He hung up, leaving her completely in the dark about where they were going and what they'd be doing
Sure enough, 20 minutes later Steve stood outside of her apartment waiting for her, he was a little nervous about the events he had planned for today, he couldn't help but think what if she didn't like it.
The sight of (Y/n) made all those negative comments in his head disappear and he smiled as she greeted him with hug "happy birthday doll" he whispered into her ear.
"Thank you Steve" she pulled back then continued "or should I say no thank you, you didn't even tell me where we're going, I didn't know what to dress for"
Steve just chuckled at her before glancing down at her basic casual wear "you look fine, plus if I told you, it wouldn't be a secret would it?"
He then opened the car door and dramatically bowed "mil' lady" the fake British accent made her giggle, she jumped in the car and as they drove, Steve's played his 40s playlist for her.

They arrived at the Brooklyn Museum, and Steve escorted her in, of course she'd been there before whilst studying in university, but it had been a long time since.
