I couldn't breathe. It was as if everytime I sucked in air between my teeth, it would go anywhere, but where it needed to be to keep me alive.
My body ached; it felt as though I had walked into a fire, and I was now approaching my death. For what felt like hours, I had been going in and out of sleep, unable to keep my eyes open for even just a second. Instead, I was faced by the darkness of the unconscious mind, and the deafening sound of my surroundings.
The darkness remained untouched until it was entangled by seconds of flashing red lights. Accompanying the glimpses of light was a high pitched screeching sound. The sound had seemed to awaken my body as my heavy eyes slowly began to force their way open.
I quickly reached to wipe the sweat from my forhead, but was slowed down by the heaviness in my arms. Had I been paralyzed? The thought swiftly left my mind as my body began to feel lighter, it was as if I had just gotten used to the gravitational pull around me.
It wasn't until I sat up completely, that I realized I was in a large metal box surrounded by crates filled with livestock and other supplies. I was confused as to why I was there, but was soon distracted by my sudden feeling of nausea.
I looked around me trying to find a way out, but was discouraged by the constant rattling of the four walls surrounding me. The box was going up, but I was unsure where. All I knew was that I was still engulfed in darkness, and a new pestering feeling had arisen in my stomach. I was terrified. Terrified of my anticipated fate that was yet to unfold.
The journey upward had gone on for what seemed to be an eternity, only further amplifying my anxiety. Suddenly, the rapid pace of the box had stopped all together causing my body to jolt forward slightly.
My anxiety got the best of me, causing an uproar of panic within me. What now? What was going to happen to me? More importantly, who or what was going to be waiting for me on the other side?
My forhead was covered by a cold sweat, as my body began to shake. I pulled my legs closer to my chest in hopes of stopping this persistent tremble, but it seemed to only cause my eyes to start watering.
My hand moved to my face to wipe the tears that had threatened to fall, but quickly fell to my side as a loud sound echoed within the box. Something was opening it.
The palms of my hands were firmly pressed against the ground, ready to help lift me up in case I needed to run. A bright light now spilled into what was then the overwhelming darkness, causing my forearm to fly up and cover my unadjusted eyes.
My eyes adjusted quicker than anticipated, as the blurry objects above me turned into a group of about 40 young men. I watched as they whispered to eachother in disbelief, with glimpses of confusion washing over their faces.
The crowd slowly began to disperse creating a pathway for two boys to push through. The bulk of the boys looked at me closely, making me scoot backwards in fear until my back made contact with the wall behind me.
"What's going on?", the thin boy with blonde hair and a unique accent questioned. He stopped at the edge where the grass stopped and the opening of the box started. His eyes widened as they met mine, "It's a girl".
He looked over at the boy who had followed close behind him as if expecting him to say something, but he didn't. My eyes left the blonde's and slowly looked up at the other boy. He looked strong and towered over the majority of the boys surrounding them.
The angry expression on his face seemed to vanish for a second, but then reappeared when he noticed my eyes on him. I tried to pry my eyes from him in fear of making him angrier than he looked, but it was as if the universe had told me to stop and bask in the moment.
I watched intently as he jumped in the box and slowly walked towards me. I blinked, finally pulling out of my trance and realizing where I was. I didn't know these people, nor did I know if I could trust them just yet.
I looked around glancing for the closest thing I could use as a weapon, but instead my attention was brought to the hand infront of me. "It's alright love, we're not going to hurt you", he looked down at me warmly.
I hadn't even noticed that the blonde boy had followed the other boy into the box, but the familiarity and kindness of his tone had caused me to calm down. I questioned if I should take his hand, but did anyways.
I could feel the tinge of safety and security in his aura, causing me to grip his hand again after he pulled me up. He looked down at my trembling hand in his, but dismissed it. Instead, he smiled at me in a motherly way, as if reassuring that he wouldn't let anyone hurt me.
I stepped behind him and looked over at the other boy, who's eyes analyzed the features of my face. I felt almost shy under his gaze which made my stomach twist, but decided it was just my anxiety.
The blonde boy then pulled at my hand that was tightly holding onto his, and led me to the wall before us. He moved me in front of him and looked behind us at the other boy, "Gally, I need you to help her up".
"Gally", I whispered and blushed slightly at the sound of his name. The boy I now knew as Gally, sighed seemingly annoyed by the request, but walked over to me regardless.
He placed his hands on my hips roughly lifting me towards the rest of the boys. The young men that once stood above me, now grabbed me helping me up.
After a few seconds, I regained my balance and stood up completely looking at the boys who had now given me space. Their eyes were fixated on me as if I were a toddler trying to walk for the first time, and to be completely honest it felt that way.
I cautiously walked forward, but soon stopped taking in the scenery in front of me. The realization hit me, I wasn't trapped in the box, nor had I just escaped from it. No, I hadn't escaped at all. I was still trapped, but this time in a bigger box.
I took in the four walls that contained us with wariness. I didn't know how long I would be there, let alone who put us in here. All I knew was that it was only a matter of time before the truth became transparent.
