As we had approached the homestead, the roaring sound of voices cutting eachother off had seemed to only escalate. Each voice arguing over what I presumed to be my unexpected arrival.
"Are they always this loud", my voice now raised a few octaves trying to speak over the noisy dispute behind the door in front of us.
Chuck squinted his eyes then placed his finger to his lips shushing me. "You know you really do ask a lot of questions. You're like Thomas. You two would definitely get along", he whispered.
I rolled my eyes at Chuck's perceptible annoyance, then proceeded to reach for the handle on the door. "No don't go in, this gathering is strictly for the keepers", this time Chuck was panicking.
"That's ridiculous, you're being ridiculous", my hand was now placed on the door ready to turn the handle at any given moment.
Chuck's hand now grabbed onto my upper arm in hopes of prying my hands off, "No, that's the rules and I'm being cautious".
"But if it's about me, don't I have a right to know what's going on", I was tired of this game of inquiry, all I desired was an explanation. "Well", Chuck was interrupted by the door flying open causing us both to stagger backwards.
The lofty stature had his back towards us as he yelled at the rest of the boys within the homestead, "Don't come crying to me, when everything goes to shit", he spat.
The figure I now recognized as Gally grabbed the door slamming it shut, eliciting a gasp from me. Chuck quickly stepped forward placing his arm in front of my chest protectively. He seemed unsure of the harm Gally would cause, but was ready to fight back regardless.
Gally turned around, noticing our presence. He looked down at Chuck, who now stood taller than before. He scoffed as his eyes now found the reason behind Chuck's defensiveness.
"This is all their fault", he mumbled under his breath, then shook his head. His green eyes glided between Chuck and I, until they finally rested upon mine.
His lips curved up slightly, his eyes presently glaring as if challengingly, "Chuck, you need to remember who your enemies are".
The harshness that enveloped his tone left me feeling vulnerable as he pushed past us. Not to mention, the impact of his shoulder against mine caught me off guard making me feel even smaller than before. He didn't even know me, nor did I know him, yet he had already labeled me as an enemy.
Chuck had seemed to detect my defenselessness as he opened his mouth to speak, "Leave him. Just so you know, it's not you. He's just been on edge since Thomas showed up. He thinks the world is against him".
Chuck smiled reassuringly as the arm that once hovered in front of me dropped to his side. I smiled trying to match his expression, but failed causing a slight frown to appear on Chuck's face.
