Why?
"She’s waking up," a voice said.
My mind was foggy and disoriented. What had happened?
Light filled my vision. I groaned at the sudden disruption and looked around.
I was in a blue room with black tile floors. The only things that were in the room was a bed a lamp a desk and a sofa where Reminiscence sat.
Sebastian loomed over me, Ray by his side.
"Are you okay?” Sebastian asked running his hand over my forehead, checking my temperature.
I nodded my head slowly, trying to avoid another major headache. The memories came flooding back in high tide. The pain had numbed to a dull ache.
"Aren’t you going to introduce us Sebastian?” Reminiscence said walking over to Sebastian and slipping her arm through his.
"I don’t know, Reminiscence,“ Sebastian said his voice poison as he pushed her away softly but forcefully. “I think she already knows you as the jerk who punishes family friends just to prove her power, not to mention the lovely introduction you had in front of the coven. I think that’s enough, don’t you?"
I stared open mouthed at Sebastian who, since meeting, had only been well-mannered and childish, if not amusing. He’d never raised his voice or been mad at anyone.
“Half sister. Don’t call her my sister.” Ray said.
The hurt in Reminiscence’s eyes was clear.
"I'm Anneliese,” I said quickly. “What’s your name?"
"Reminiscence.” She stuttered, not expecting me to address her directly after our unfortunate meeting, “I was not expecting you to be forgiving. I would have expected thrown objects, obscenities or a plain punch." she said softly and carefully as if she was scared I would heed to her suggestion.
"No, I don't blame you." I said simply.
“So you’re Ray’s sister?" I changed the subject, and cutting off Ray’s protest that she was anything other than that, with a glare in his direction.
"Yes, I’m also the coven’s leader but please, just call me Remmi, all my friends do.” she said shyly, smiling at me gratefully.
“Oh, you have friends now?” Sebastian said bitterly.
"Most of my friends call me Anna,” I said, glaring at Sebastian who simply placed his hands up in mock surrender.
A tall burly man strode in, looking down his nose at us. When Remmi saw him her eyes turned cold and hard like a marshmallow turning into rock.
Her façade returning and her other persona taking place of the happy bubbly teenager.
"What do you want?” she said stoically before turning to me. She winked at me and turned to him, glaring steadily.
I stared in confusion as I watched the scenario play out. I was fighting a giggle but also wanting to ask
Remmi what’s going on.
"Ma'am, I'm sorry for interrupting,” he said out of breathe. "But you’re needed."
He bowed to Remmi but then turned on his heel and bowed to Ray and Sebastian before walking out the door with a slam. All without acknowledging my presence.
“You know it doesn’t hurt to say bye, Jerk!” I said through the door.
We all giggled but Remmi quickly sobered up.
"Well, apparently, I’ve got to go. I’ll see you later, Anna, Sebastian, Ray.” She waved gingerly and walked towards the door.
"Bye Remmi,” I called out to her.
She froze, hand on the shiny knob. Remmi ran across the room and tackled me in a bear hug. "Thank you . . . friend.“ She said, tearing up.
When she was gone, Sebastian turned to Ray, "Go get Anneliese some water, please?” He said sweetly, his word holding a double meaning.
Ray sent Sebastian a knowing look and was out the door.
Sebastian and I sat in awkward silence, alone for the first time.
"Are you okay, Anneliese? I'm sorry, it was all my fault. You were also stupid. Why did you take the punishment for me?” he asked. His voice filled with curiosity as he was desperately searched for an answer, hoping to find it plainly written on my face, in my eyes.
"You don't even know me." His rant continued. "Is it that you like me, because I get it . . . you’re beautiful too, but I barely know you and-"
I raised my hand, dismissing the thought. "Sebastian, like you said, I don't even know you. How could you even think I would see you that way.”
His face fell and he was silent as I continued.
"Don't blame yourself for the punishment ordeal. It is against my own rules to let anyone get hurt because of me, nothing else."
“Oh, okay, . . . I get it. I’m sorry for thinking too much into it,” And without another word he strode from place where he stood.
It wasn't till later that night, when I pondered over my crazy day that I finally had a thought.
Did he call me beautiful?
