Sabrina McLain:
"Brina?"
the small voice came from the dark
beyond the dimness
and familiarity
of my bedroom.
I rolled over.
Baylee looked like a ghost
in her white pajamas
and her glowing white face
looked sad.
For a moment, I was startled.
She didn't look real.
"Yeah?"
I spoke but barely any sound came out.
I tried to clear my throat but that
didn't really work either.
She seemed to understand
what I meant.
She drifted over to my bed
and crawled under the covers
next to me.
She was cold.
She put her head on my shoulder.
Her soft hair tickled
my jaw.
She smelled like mint toothpaste
and her green apple shampoo.
"Brina why are you mad at Kyle?"
she asked.
I almost choked.
This was a difficult question to answer.
"He likes someone else."
I answered simply.
It was true.
But some part of me felt as if I was lying.
Baylee looked up at me with enormous dark eyes.
"I don't think he does." she whispered.
I felt a squirming feeling
in my stomach,
like I'd eaten something bad.
"You don't?"
the question slipped out of my mouth
before I could think.
I didn't want to sound needy
or desperate.
Baylee shifted against my side.
"No I don't.
I've seen the way he looks at you.
And he's calling you
and visiting you
and you just won't let him back in.
But I think you should."
she said.
I was surprised at this.
I didn't think anyone noticed when
Kyle called me
and when he had come over to the house.
But apparently Baylee noticed.
"Why should I let him back in?
