Sabrina McLain:
"Okay, now open your eyes!"
Lilly Nicole Porter
exclaimed from somewhere behind me.
She lifted her hands away from
my eyelids
and I opened my eyes.
"Wow."
She appeared in front of me,
her arms crossed across her chest,
her pretty face pouting.
"That's all you have to say?"
I shrugged.
Lilly Nicole Porter had led me to
an ice skating rink.
Little kids in kiddy skates
clung to their wobbly-kneed fathers.
Independent teenage boys pretended
to ignore their cackling-in-clumps mothers.
Young women skated gracefully
arm-in-arm with their boyfriends,
who looked in love and chilly.
"It's an ice rink."
I stated.
I'd never been good at ice skating.
Lilly Nicole Porter rolled her eyes and turned around
to wave someone over.
And out of the skate-rental room
came Kyle and Bryson, looking happy.
They were bundled up in
sweatshirts, gloves, and scarves.
They waddled towards us on skates and
Lilly Nicole Porter handed me a pair
of skates.
She looked giddy.
"C'mon 'Brina. We're teaching you how to skate."
