I wasn't surprised when
the doorbell rang.
I was even less surprised,
when I opened it,
to find Kyle
on my porch.
The sky outside was
a dark, dark
coal black.
And yet I wasn't surprised
to see him.
I simply slipped my feet
into my boots
and grabbed my jacket
and closed the door behind me.
We walked along the empty street.
It was very quiet.
I glanced at the clock
on my phone.
It was almost ten at night.
But some giddy little part of me
didn't care at all.
Mom wasn't home anyway.
She was out with Marc.
Kyle and I crossed the street
and suddenly he took
my hand
and laced his fingers
into the spaces
between mine.
I felt a blush.
My toes started to tingle.
I realized where he was leading me.
We sat down on the rim
of the fountain.
And the lights
made patterns
on his face.
I missed his face.
I took one hand
and I reached out.
And my palm
touched his cheek,
light,
like feathers.
He was warm.
His eyes looked
one dimensional,
like someone had
drawn them on paper
and put them on his face.
He opened his lips,
which looked like
folds of a satin dress,
to speak.
"Brina.
I am so sorry.
I know that I've hurt you.
I know that I led you to believe
that I liked you,
and then I turned around
