Zion, even though his eyes were glued to the roof, managed to find my hand to hold. Slowly, his eyes trail down to me and they were filled with questions when he saw that I was smiling.
"You know something, don't you?" He growled, his voice low but it sounds almost non-human. I made an attempt to pull my hand out from his grip. My smile vanished as I noticed the changes his eyes were doing yet again.
This time, it didn't change back, even after a blink and I involuntarily took a step back, fear arising. Zion was obviously watching, his eyes traveling all over my face and ended on my eyes. He snarled softly but then straightened up and closed his eyes.
I didn't wait to see if they would turn back to normal as I brisk walk to where Brandon and Laura was at. The rest of the students have already woken up by the sound and were watching the sky changing colours, every few minutes due to the bombs being lit.
"They are nearing us," I heard Brandon say as I finally neared them and dropped beside him. He saw that I looked confused and asked me what was wrong. I didn't want to tell him about Zion so I just shook my head.
"I'm just not sure how to feel about being rescued; I'm excited but also not. I'm more worried about the rest of us," I said as I turned towards Laura and Layla who were looking at me, worries evident on their faces.
"What do you mean?" Like the twins they were, they asked the question at the same time.
I heaved a sigh as I carefully try to arrange my words so that I don't scare them. "Long story short, we are being rescused."
They looked happy and was about to relay the news to their partners before I continued, with more seriousness. "BUT only a few number of people can be rescued at a time so some of us have to stay here."
Laura gasped and she began to sob slowly. I was sure she felt hopeless again. The stronger twin, Layla, was speechless. She almost looked defeated and I'm sure if she was wondering about what will happen to the rest of us.
Amidst this drama, Amanda managed to run towards Zion and was crying in his arms. I caught him glaring at me, but I didn't hold his gaze. I was too busy catching up with Laura to think about whatever Zion was thinking. Though one thing for sure, I knew he wasn't a human.
The orange in the sky flared again and the sounds of gunshots got louder. For sure, the army soldiers are coming closer and we will be saved. However, the heavy feeling in my heart stayed as I know, not everyone will be saved today. I heard the sound of the engines, coming to a stop nearby and everyone in the gym stayed silent, holding their breathe.
"Bravo, be on standby for the monsters. Alpha, let's go!" I heard someone shouted and soon, silhouettes of people – actual humans – were in front of the glass doors. One person was peering inside and I saw Zion, who was beside the door, quickly pushing aside all the tables that was blocking the entrance.
The other guys helped him and the soldiers came in, one at a time. A soldier came up to Zion, talking to him, I assume while the others were standing guard by the door, making sure nothing tried to come in.
Suddenly, everyone erupted into cheers, finally knowing they will be saved. But the soldiers were not smiling; there was this air around them that was dark and sad, that caused everyone to hush down. Even if I know what they would say next, I still had the dreadful feeling. Brandon had stationed himself beside me, taking my hand into his and giving a squeeze. He smiled at me, too cheerfully and I was so afraid of what to come next.
"Hey!" Brandon started to drag me forward as he called out to the soldier beside Zion. The soldier gave a salute once he saw him.
"Sir, we have come to rescue you and the others. However you should know our protocol. We cannot save everyone at once," he turned to Zion and slightly glared at him. "This man doesn't get it."
I could hear a tone of a man who was tired of dealing with troublesome matter. I wanted to giggle, but it was hardly appropriate at this moment so I stayed behind Brandon, making myself as small as possible.
"Look, dude," he tugged on my hand that cause me to come out from my hiding spot. "Ashley, tell him what's going on."
