"I can't believe you did that."
Some girl began to talked to me. I can only give her a smile and leaned my head against Zion's shoulder. It had been around 30 minutes since the soldiers had left the gym, along with my friends and five other students.
Layla almost slapped me in the face when I made the decision. Laura had swore she would kill me if I made out of here alive.
The irony in that.
I remembered and chuckled. Fred just told me he would love to see me again and to take care. Mike, he was a sobbing mess when he heard what I had said. I have never seen that boy cried so badly before, I almost felt like I had made the wrong decision.
But I know I didn't.
I reached out to intertwine my hand with Zion's. His big hands were warm and it helped me fend off the cold. He didn't mind the touching; since he was the one who seems to be touchy with me first. His eyes had long gone back to the forest green that I enjoyed looking at. I knew he was waiting for me to ask about them but I chose not to because we would turn out to be strangers soon and I don't feel the need to openly talk about something as strange as that.
Though, I won't mind if he was the one to tell me but he doesn't seem to make a move so I would stay quiet too. I looked up at him, at the smile he was giving me and the little taps of his fingers on my hand. I was about to tell him to stop but he opened his mouth to ask me something I kind of dreaded.
"So, what made you stay?"
Geez, what should I say? It was not because of you so don't be flattered? I did it for my friends? Or maybe I was just like you who felt that I have the responsibility over this kids?
I didn't reply; only shrugged. He didn't seem to take my answer as it is and wanted to say more before Amanda came to sit at his other side. Without saying anything, she hooked her arm onto Zion's and leaned her head on his shoulder. She spared me a glare before she closed her eyes and smiled against his arm.
"What the fuck?" Zion swore under his breath, greatly irritated. He may have wanted to pull his arm away but somehow Amanda has a strong grip over him. He sighed in defeat, glancing over me as I just gave him an apologetic smile.
I shifted away from him, feeling the tiredness come back but with the sun slowly basking the dead town with its warmth, I stayed awake to see the day. There had been no sound or disturbance from the monster so I think it was safe to say we could relax a while.
"I really wanna shower!" Amanda groaned beside Zion, though she was mostly talking to herself. Both Zion and me chose to not pay attention to the girl as she began talking of nonsensical things.
I wonder how Zion managed to bear with all her chattering.
Though, it felt better to have her talking than sitting in the silence, dreading if we would ever be saved.
Bang!
I heard a faint gunshot coming from none other than the outside of the gym. Zion and I looked at each other with wide eyes, knowing the soilders can't possibly come back to save us in this short amount of time. I held my breathe as I heard engines cutting of in front of the door and eyes appeared at the other side of the stained glass doors.
"I know yall are in there. Open the door and we can talk!" The person shouted, rattling the door with his rifle. Zion stood up almost immediately without a second thought and I rushed forward to help him. His friends helped us to bring down the chairs and tables.
Soon, one of the entrance was void of any obstacles, letting the strangers in. They began to crowd around the students, pointing their guns to each and everyone of them.
"Alright, who's the leader?" A boy, I assume was a student like us, shouted from the back of the crowd. He looked around, his rifle tucked behind his back. It made me uncomfortable, seeing this many kids, coming out from nowhere. Instantly I grabbed Zion's hand, tugging onto it slightly so that he would face me.
However, Zion ignored my pleas and raised his other hand, getting the attention of the crowd. "That would be me."
"Zion Matthews, the quarterback for Eastwood High, huh?" He scoffed, making my blood boil.
Who does this fucker think he is? Just because he wield a gun doesn't mean he's the boss of this place.
"I'm Daniel Smith," he came forward and peeked behind Zion, smiling to me. I immediately thought about Damon when I saw that smile; the resemblance was uncanny.
"Damon's brother!" I gasped, closing my mouth quickly after saying that. Daniel laughed and nodded, but it was unsettling.
"Yeah, his brother. We've only met once but it seems you didn't remember. Anyways, I'm Daniel."
In fact, I do remember him. Even if I had seen him once before. He had this personality that I wasn't very fond of and it made me swore to never in the rest of my life meet him again, if possible.
Sadly, that was not the case, since he was in front of me right now. I had this feeling that I knew why he was here but I didn't really say anything. I stood beside Zion silently, still clenching his hand, waiting for more answers from Daniel.
"I'm here to save you, on behalf of Damon, my brother."
