I pulled myself up, the sand digging and irritating my prune-like fingers as I panted. Safe to say, I wasn't expecting any of this. I mean, who would expect to drown, grow a tail, and travel to Portugal in the span of a night. Yes, Portugal. Turns out my iridescent and holographic tail was stronger and faster than I could have ever imagined.
I couldn't help but let a smile dance upon my lips as I imagined the underwater world I tried to fully explored, the thought paired with a feeling of indescribable happiness. It was a whole different world down there. I remembered the way I sliced through the water, a flick of my fins enough to send me soaring through the vast blueness. For the first time in my life, just being in the ocean's grasp, I felt beautiful.
The whale taunted me with its silvery song, the sound growing fainter as the whale moved away, practically teasing me; telling me to join her.
'I'm coming,' I wanted to cry, daydreaming of swimming with the largest mammal, but unfortunately, I was still staring in shock at the iridescent and holographic tail, admiring it from all sides.
My tail was long, (a whole two feet longer than my legs) and covered in layered, shimmering scales. Its shape vaguely followed the shape of my legs, meaning I had flaring hips, both in and out of the water. The tail itself was rounder than my legs, and although smooth, I knew there were muscles under the scales, primed and ready to power me through the ocean. Long, slightly transparent, and delicate fins trailed from the end of my tail, and I could open and close them, similar to my fingers.
When I finally gave in to the urge to run my hand down my tail, I discovered with shock, it was much more sensitive to the touch than my skin was. I could feel the currents of the water sweeping around me, and the water below me was moving in a different direction, than the water above. I could read the temperature of the water close to the surface, and how it was much warmer than the ocean below me, but I still retained that warm feeling I had before, like sunlight actually resided in my body.
I curled my tail back and forth, using my arms and hands to stabilize myself direct myself. I drifted forward, shifting my body into a parallel position, as I gave myself time to be accustomed to how I move my body. Though I was panicked, I was calm amongst the confusion and vibrant energy of the cove. I was not drawn towards the choppy surface or the waves above. Instinctively, I knew down here was where my peace was.
