The gravel and sand crunched under my feet; the only sound occasionally piercing the air was Meir's questions or curses when she happened to step on a particularly sharp shell.

"Sereia, what's going on?"

I chose to ignore my sister, instead, I kept my gaze locked on the soft waves. I couldn't help myself. I needed to go back to the cove.

Alton, my five-year-old brother, had already fallen asleep in my arms, his dark brown/black hair ticking my collarbone as he left out snuffly snores. Meir, on the other hand, was wide awake and slightly freaked out, jumping at the littlest sound.

"Sereia, why are we doing this?"

Good question.

I had decided to trust my instincts; I had decided that Meir and Alton were merfolk as well. They had to be. That was why I was going to reveal my tail to them; I trusted them with my life, and I can't keep this life-changing secret under wraps for much longer.

I was a mermaid.

I was almost tempted to blurt those words out right now but kept my mouth shut. I wanted to wow them when I jumped out of the water, showing off my glorious tail. I wanted this to be a moment that they would remember and carry for the rest of their lives. Who knew? They might become merfolk themselves.

"We are almost there," I called to Meir, effortlessly navigating the rocky terrain, while my sister had a bit more trouble.

And then I stepped into the cove. Cliffs surrounded the cove, making it untouchable and private except for swishing tides and raging storms. It was untouched by humans, with warm soft golden sand dunes, trees, and cliffs blocking the cove from anyone's line of sight, tide pools brimming with life, and cresting, foamy waves rising higher and higher. It was picturesque, and one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen; the trees even seemed to form an archway around the full moon.

I breathed in the salty wind and the sheer beauty of this place; my body instantly relaxing.

"Woah," I heard Meir breathe from behind me, and I knew she caught up to me.
