"I hate walking," Aerwyna mumbled as she stumbled once again; my arms wrapped around the mermaid doing nothing to steady her. Her hands fidgeted with the tank-top straps of my shimmery emerald green shirt - which I had to say, looked quite lovely on her. It set off her radiant brown skin and matched perfectly with her mahogany curls. I knew if her eyes were not a milky white, the green color would also look stunning with her usual amethyst gaze. "How do humans do this all the time? No wonder they are so grumpy."
I felt like I should be offended by that, but I was more preoccupied with the fact that Aerwyna had stumbled again, and the pearly whiteness in her usually bright purple eyes hadn't faded. She was still blind.
No.
Aerwyna had reassured Meir, Alton, and I, that in order to become human, her body had to give something important up in trade. She said it wasn't permanent, and that it was already starting to fade. She said that it would be gone by tomorrow. And yet, I didn't believe that.
Aerwyna's clumsiness had seemed to only get worse as she forced her new legs to go forward, wincing when sharp shells caused splotches of blood to stain the golden sand. We had barely made it to the edge of the cove, and Aerwyna had already fallen down nine times. I was slightly impressed.
Mostly worried.
I pulled Aerwyna up, her fingers digging into my sides as she relied on me to pull herself up. She brushed sand off her torso, staring at the ground around her feet with disdain. "They don't work!" Aerwyna complained. "All that pain and this blindness, and they don't work!"
As Alton came to Aerwyna's other side to support her as well - (Meir guiding the way), I forced my lips not to twitch into a smile. "Remember, one foot in front of the other." I slowly coaxed. "Work with gravity, and slowly put some of your weight on one of your feet, then step forward and put some of your weight on another."
"In case that was confusing for you - as it was for me, basically just fall, then catch yourself with your foot, then fall again with your other foot." Alton supplied helpfully, and I rolled my eyes at my little brother. He responded by smirking facetiously at me.
