I saw Meir first.

I saw how her legs stretched, glittering blush pink scales jutting out of her skin, ripping her flesh in the process.

I saw how her thighs molded together first, then her knees, then her shins, and finally her feet, as scales covered the entire lower half of her body.

I turned away when her feet started stretching into teal fins.

Alton next.

I was thankful he was unconscious, the way his feet twisted into dark blue and gray fins was kinda gruesome and defiantly looked painful. Stormy blue, sky blue, blue-black, and dark blue colored scales had already covered his tail, which was rounder than mine, and lacked the flaring hips my tail had.

I whirled around; not willing to see more of my siblings getting tortured as they transformed. The currents jostled me, before stilling. I breathed a sigh of relief. It's done. And my theory was right; Meir and Alton were merfolk. I heard Meir's whimpering before the groaning started, and she blinked, still bleary-eyed, and moaning in pain. Alton took a little longer, but eventually stirred as well, groaning and whimpering in pain, as he rubbed his eyes, and let out a surprised shout when he looked down.

I couldn't blame the little dude. He had just found out he had a four-foot-long tail in various shades of blue - that would be a shock to the system.

He reached for his scales, hesitantly stroking his thumb along one of his scales, giving them a sharp tug to make sure they were real and connected to him.

He wobbled, his tail unsuccessfully trying to steady him as he drifted and floundered, awkwardly moving towards the surface. He tried to widen his fins, but instead, he toppled over - a source of slight amusement for me. Okay, time to step in.

I swam over, flicking my tail and reaching him in less than half a breath, as I reached out my arms, trying to help my little brother. "Hold out your arms out and spread your fingers apart. The water should be caught in the webbing of your fingers, and it will steady you."

He followed my instructions and managed to stabilize, his now inky, raven black hair flowing and shifting with the water, as he floundered, then straightened his tail and regained balance.
