I woke up the next morning as the sun shines inside the hospital room. That thing happened where when you wake up and you aren't sure where you are. Until I fully woke up to see the hospital room. A few minutes of just laying in the bed and relaxing, the Nurse walks in. "Morning Margret." She smiled. "Morning" I tried to sound like I was more awake then I was. Since I wasn't a morning person. I never have been. "Do you mind if I check on your back?" She asked "Not at all." I sat up fully and leaned forward. I feel her untie my robe and the cold air on my back. "Good news, they are healing very well." She said before covering my back again. "You'll be able to get let out early." I smiled. "Really?" I turned to her. She nodded. "You'll have your medications to take for a few weeks to help the healing process but you're good to go." She smiled. "I'll go call your family." She heads out of the room. I know it's only been a few days but I'm kinda going stir crazy. I can only read for so long before I need to get out. It's like that at home too. Even though I'm an introvert who loves her alone time, I need to get out of the house and hang out with the gang.
When Steve walked into my room with some clothes in his hand, I was a little confused. Then I connected the dots. Darry and Soda both worked and Pony was at school. Steve is off today so it makes sense they asked him. "Hey Peggy." He smiled, I got out of bed and we hugged. "Hey Steve." I smiled. He pulls away. "Here are your clothes." He hands me a pare of jeans and a shirt for me to put on. "Thanks." I stepped aside. A nurse walks in and walks up to Steve. "Alright, she is supposed to take medications every night before bed. She should take it easy and not do a lot of physical activity." She explained to Steve while I got dressed in the corner. "Got it." Steve said. "Whenever you're ready Peggy, you're free to go." The nurse looked over at me. I slipped on my converse. "Thanks." I say. She leaves me and Steve. "How's my girl?" He asked. "Better. Going a bit stir crazy." I chuckled. "I can imagine. Let's get ya home." He puts his arm around me and leads me out the door. I held my stack of comic books and a few books in my arms as we leave the hospital. "Thanks for coming to get me Steve. I know Darry and Soda couldn't take the day off." I said. "Anything for you Peggy. You guys can't afford it..." he slips both hands in his jean pockets as we walked. We left the hospital and I smiled at finally being free from my room.
Steve walked me home, chatting as we walked. We both kept an eye out for socs, luckily none came our way. I noticed Steve was still a bit beat up from last night. Nothing too major. He had a cut in his lip and his knuckles were bruised. We walked into the house and Steve plops down on the couch, turning in the tv. I head to my room to put back my books.
It only took a half hour of watching tv with Steve before I was bored to death. I groaned before getting up. "Steve let's go somewhere!" I crossed my arms and looked down at him. "You are supposed to take it easy Pegg." He protested. "I'll still be taking it easy if we go get burgers and ice cream." I began to pout a little. It's worked before, it will work now. He sighs and thought about it for a second before getting up. "Fine, but you are paying for your own food! I'm not getting paid for a few days" he said. "Yay!" I rushed to my room to grab my wallet. Putting it in my back pocket. As I walked to my door again, I see my jacket hanging on my desk chair. It was charred all on the back with many holes. It's unwearable now. I picked it up and ran my hand over the holes. "Hey you coming?" Steve walks into my room and sees me. "If you want you can wear my vest." He suggested. I looked over at him. "No it's alright. I just..." my eyes drifted down to the jacket again. "I didn't know it got this bad." I laid it back down on my desk chair. "Where did ya get it?" He asked. I turned to face him again. "My dad gave it to me when I was 14. It was huge on me but I wore it everywhere and I finally was growing into it." I kept myself from getting too emotional. "I can see why it meant so much to you." He smiled. I nodded. "Let's go eat." I walked past him and he followed me out. It wasn't a long walk to the Dairy Queen. Maybe 10ish minutes. When we made it there, it was almost empty with only a few workers. Since it was a school day. I ordered a burger and fries with a coke. Deciding on getting my ice cream later. Steve ordered his food before we both waited. He told me more about the rumble. We both got our food and sat at a table nearby in the shade. "After he kicked me a few times, I grabbed his legs and pulled him down with me. I was able to climb on top of him and punched him. Pow pow pow!" He punched the air a few times and popped a fry in his mouth. "You really gave those socs hell huh?" I chuckled and sipped my Coke. "You would be disappointed if I didn't." He said. "Yes I would definitely be disappointed." I smirked before eating my burger. "It wasn't the same without you though Peggy." Steve takes a sip of his coke. "Yeah, a rumble full of pulling socs off of me must be the perfect way to spend an evening." I said sarcastically. "I still don't understand that. Why they all target the female. Instead of not wanting to hit you." He said. I shrugged. "I can't tell ya." I took another bite of my burger. A pare of hands appear on the table on each side of me. I was about to turn to see who practically had their arms around me, but the ring on the left hand and the voice that started to speak in my ear gave Dallas away. "Well look who escaped the hospital" His lips brushed against my ear. I raised my shoulders up. "Dallas..." I held back giggles. He pulls away and sits down next to me, stealing a few of my fries in the process. "Hey Dally." Steve greeted him. "Hey man." I pulled my fries away from him as he reached for another helping. "You could ask." I suggested. "But that's not as fun." He managed to snatch up another few fries before getting up. "I'll leave you two to your lunch. But I'll probably stop by later tonight." He gets up as quickly as he sat down, patting my shoulder gently before sauntering off. I turned back to my food once he left. "You're as red as a tomato." Steve smirked. "Shut it"
