I sat with Luke on the edge of the mountain, watching, waiting. The black smoke was still burning thick and dense- in three different spots. I looked down at the ground, Codie was sitting at the foot of the mountain, and his tail was wagging. I leaned my head on Luke's shoulder.
"How long to we wait?" He asked. I shrugged.
"Depends if any planes are flying through here." I answered. I haven't seen a plane since we got here, but I've seen the boat, which didn't even look this way. We have made two S.O.S signs, which is good. The fires will burn for a while, but we will need to refuel them soon. Codie's hair is great for making fires. My arm still throbbed from the tree branch, but I couldn't do much about it. As I was about to move, my stomach growled loudly.
"Seems like someones hungry." Luke chuckled. I lifted my head.
"I guess. Let's get down, and I'll come back and refuel the fire in a few hours." I said standing. Luke stood up and nodded.
"Yeah. We have to get more food though, something stole the rest of it." He brushed off his pants and started down the mountain. Damn animals. I'm tired, I don't want to hunt. I walked back to the fires, where I grabbed my bow and arrows. I slung both over my back and started to climb down beside Luke. Again, around half way down, I jumped. Luke didn't though, he was being a chicken, and continued to climb down. Once he reached me, I shook my head.
"Why didn't you just jump? It wasn't that big of a drop." I asked.
"Sorry for trying to be careful!" He answered defensively.
"True, but you wouldn't have got hurt." I put my hands on my hips.
"I'll have you know, I roll my ankles easily. That would leave me with a limp." Luke said. I chuckled.
"Still. It would've been faster." I said. Luke shook his head.
"No. My mother always taught me its better to be safe then sorry." Luke said matter-of-factionally. I put my hands up in surrender.
"Alright. You made you're point. Now can we go? I'm starving." I complained. Luke sighed over dramatically.
"Fineeeee." He dragged the word longer.
"Okay." I whistled, and Codie was by my side.
"Let's go." I said. Luke nodded with a smile and we headed back towards the cave, where I found the apple trees. Luke never told me where the pineapple plants were, or where he got the other fruit, but I'm sure as hell not getting it. The bow was still on my back, along with my arrows. I could easily shoot the fruit off their branches, instead of picking them. Sure, you may call me lazy, but cut me some slack. I've been on this damn island for around Five months with no one but a boy and a dog. I haven't eaten much either, so I'm all skin and bone. I have a bit of muscle, enough to get me through. Luke walked by my side as we made our way away from the mountain and towards our cave.
"Were did you find those fruit before?" I asked curiously. Curiosity runs in my family.
"I dunno. I found them I guess." Luke shrugged and continued to look forward.
"Okay. Well, let's go our separate ways and meet up back at the cave?" I suggested. Luke instantly shook his head.
"I'm not leaving you again." He said roughly. I sighed.
"I'll have Codie with me. Plus, I have a bow now." I said. Luke shook his head again. Why can't he just agree? Why does he have to be so goddamn stubborn?
