Chapter 5

Teresa's point of view:

"Umm, I think I found something."
I said after what felt like 3 hours of digging.
A metal plate had appeared in front of me. Before I could move any further, Newt came running and knelt down. "Now what exactly is that?"
"Metal. And not just a bit... are you seeing the small extension under the stones? That must be a kind of entry." Newt almost lay down on the floor to get an overview. Over half of the entrance was completely buried.
"Yes, now I can see it too. That means digging."
there was a sarcastic undertone, but it started digging when I wanted to question it. So I helped him and tried to lift stone by stone from this point.

Exhausted, I let myself fall back so that I could support myself with my arms. Newt did the same.
Warm sweat ran down my forehead and my hair was stuck to my face. It was now noon, so the sun, which was now at its highest point, didn't make our work any easier.
I inhaled as deeply as I could so as not to collapse. For a brief moment I closed my eyes and gave my body a little rest.
Newt didn't look too good either, just like me, he sat there powerless, and I never expected it to be so exhausting. And then there was the long way with our luggage, because we had already covered before.
I got up again and ran my hand over my forehead.
"Do you think we'll find something down there?" I said every word individually and with every movement I felt the dryness.
"I don't know, let's find out." And already he jumped up as if he hadn't exhausted himself. It took a moment, he thought, but then he held out his hand to me. I grabbed it and with our strength together we pulled myself up. I brushed off the dirt with my hands.
Newt was pulling the hook when I got to him too. He braced himself against it with all his might, but it didn't open. "It will not work like that."
I told him, he just replied with an annoyed look. I knelt next to him and looked at the round, silver gap.
I gently ran my finger over it, suddenly feeling a small hole.
Newt had also noticed that something was different. I pulled my hand away for a moment, so he put his on the same spot and pushed it down. A touchscreen plate came to light. "What is that?" the confusion was written on my face.
"Just put your hand on it." I did an It worked! With a loud hiss, the door opened.
We looked at each other in amazement. Without saying anything else, I turned and descended the black tunnel. It was kind of reckless and thoughtless, but Newt didn't protest. The first steps were unfamiliar, it was dark ... I had to get used to this tightness.
Newt, who had closed the door, was now following me too.
It went on like this for a long time. I had long since lost the feeling of space and time.
Just as I was about to take the next step, I realized I had reached the bottom. And when I put my foot on the ground the light went on.
Newt winced, and so did I. It was unexpected! Only a few seconds later he was standing next to me.
I turned around, ready to see something bad, but that was amazing! I continued forward with my mouth open. Just like in the WCKD main building, everything here was totally high tech!
Large computers in shades of white and blue towered in front of us and there was a Berk in the middle of the room!
How long I hadn't seen one! And then it came into play when I had betrayed them.
For a brief moment my feelings flooded me, but I recovered.
Newt had already explored the other things, and only now did I notice that there was a lot more. I turned in circles. Everything here was huge!
In addition to the large center, which was set up like a kind of control room, there was also a kitchen with lots of canned goods, a bathroom, a bedroom and a laboratory. There were things everywhere that you needed to survive, or with which you could pass the time.
"It's crazy. This is like a kind of bunker and nobody knew about it."
I talked more to myself than to Newt. "What was this built for?"
Newt also somehow spoke to such himself.

I went over to the big screens and hit the on button.
"Hello, I am the Wckd operating system. Nice that you are here Teresa" at the same time Newt and I turned to the center where a transparent screen had appeared.
"By scanning your fingerprint, I now have all of your data. You can call up all kinds of things at any time.
I was also able to identify your companion through the cameras on the wall to your right. Welcome Newt. I am sure you have a lot of questions. This is a disaster bunker.
Immediately after the solar flare, some were built all over the world. Nobody comes in here, you can only get out. There is also food for 4 years and a berk.

I am really sorry that you are here under these circumstances. Usually the Berk is ready for use. The explosions made some mess.

I still had so many questions, but there was no point in thinking about them now.
"Wow ... that was really unexpected." "Hmmmm" I replied. I hadn't processed all this information yet. I yawned.
"That's kind of creepy, this device ... it knows everything, that's the answer to all of our questions. If it is practicing satellite has observed everything, then Wckd too! We have to see that." Newt was full of enthusiasm.
"Yeah, sure .... go ahead. I'll take a look at the Berk first. Without him we're stuck here."

It was already evening.
I had looked with the Berk, but had not yet found the fault.
From the bed I caught a glimpse of Newt, who was still at the computer. He'd been stuffing himself with information for hours.
It was only a matter of time before he found something he wouldn't like.
