Ignore the cut off arm ⤴️💀
October 10, 2000
Over one week laterIt was a cool evening that was fading into nighttime. I stood in the background as the flashes from the press popped like pins as I hid behind the girls, distracted by my phone. Marshall found a way to send me the out of pocket song lyrics he could write everyday since I've been gone. For a moment, I started to doubt myself about this whole talent search ordeal. That was until we actually found what we were looking for.
Jade Sugandh.
Cassandra Dixon.
Veronica Rodriguez-Castellano.
Kennedy Closs.
The multi talented, multi-ethnic, vocally superior Spice Girls that never was but will be . All of us listened as their voices carried throughout the room. When they were done vocalizing, a small applause came from the media. Our publicist attempted to start acknowledging reporters for questions until Carmen started talking, unexpectedly.
"After countless stale performances of pop songs, we finally found something that we could work with. Four girls who are attractive, no older than 18 and actually talented. The music industry today just seems to have the equivalence of one big middle school talent show. The bar is set so low that if you're just pretty then you can pretty much be a star. Hell, I can't even sing but I might as well send in an audition tape, am I right?"
Aaliyah leaned towards me, "Make her stop talking..now."I subtly snatched the mic respectfully, acknowledging a female journalist from a local Fox News station.
"I'm gonna be the one to address the elephant in the room...the diversity. Was this planned or...?"
I glanced at Aaliyah seeing if she wanted to answer but she seemed just as boggled as I was. "If you're asking if we picked the members based on race then no. Next question. "
Another journalist took a stand. This time, a suited male."What do you think makes this group unique?"
Jade stepped up to the mic, "I think what makes this group unique is the melange of it all. For once, we have pop girls who don't look like the typical pop stars. We have a group where everyone brings their own personal flavor. A group where any little girl can look at the TV screen and be proud to see someone who looks like her. The blending is what makes us remarkable. Our personalities make us unique. And talent makes us phenomenal. Together, we are Serenity."
The rest of the conference faded out as I was distracted again playing with my dialpad but I was caught off guard when a redhead female reporter from Access Hollywood stood up. "Ananda, would you like to take this time to address the rumor that you're dating rapper Eminem?"
The room went suicide silent and all eyes and microphones were on me.
"I...I um.."
Aaliyah took the mic, "Thank you all so much for your time. That'll be all the questions we'll be taking. Stay tuned for new music and other endeavors!"
Audible frenzy could be heard from the press below as we all clustered backstage. The girls took some bottled water from a table nearby while Aaliyah and Carmen talked with some other media people backstage." What..was that..."
"I almost slapped that Fox News lady."
"The nerve of that chick."
"Is it true?" a female voice questioned. All of our heads snapped in the direction of Kennedy, the blonde of the group who was practically twins with Britney Spears.
"Are you really dating Eminem?" She asked. Vanessa's eyes lit up and she rushed towards me."I heard he's going on tour soon. Can you get us on?"
Cassie jumped in, "Oh my god, can we meet him?"
