I can't seem to do anything right with her nowadays. We were fine until about two months ago when Kristen came back into the country. She was so enraged when she found out that Jossie and I were now in a serious relationship. To her Jossie was going to be just one of my flings that I'll get over. She never thought once in her life that I'd be able to get into a serious relationship. She had made it clear to me when we started seeing each other that she did not want anything other than just having a good time together. When she heard the news that it was official she couldn't believe it. She wanted to see me. I had to manouver my time so as to fix her in because I was not sure what she could do to my beautiful flower. It seemed like this is what she really wanted because me giving her time was really taking my time from Jossie. That morning when she saw Kristen and I in my house was the last stroll for her. She didn't really call it quits but from the look on her face I knew she was tired of pretending that she wasn't hurting. I loved Jossie to bits but with Kristen in the picture she wasn't going to believe that so I had to find a way to get rid of her. Not kill her, just getting her out of my life for good. Like every year I got an invitation to attend the charity gala and this year I was going to be date less because I'm sure as hell Jos wouldn't let me accompany her. I wasn't letting Kristen near me cause that would be adding salt to an injury so instead I went alone. The Cartwrights sure know how to throw an event. All the popular and famous people were attendance. From where I stood I saw Jos, Stephy and Laurea come in together and then Kristen stopped them midway.
“Nowadays they seem to let in just anyone in to these prestigious events." Kristen said.
“We are here for charity Kristen,be more charitable," Laurea told her.
“So you two are on her side now?"
“You had better..."
I saw Jos hold Stephy's hand to stop her.
“I believe we haven't really been formally introduced, well I actually know you as Christine."
“It is Kristen."
“Hmm, whatever. Well, I'm Jossie Salvatore Cartwright. Yes and if you might be wondering, the same Cartwrights who are holding this event. I am attending this event by default while you are somebody's plus one. I am not one to look down on others but please if you may excuse us we have some important people who are worth our attention. Ladies."
Whatever Jos said seemed to shut her up for entirely the whole night. I watched my friends from a far as the party went on. Well most part of it I was interrupted by people who wanted to talk to me and sometimes I would have my father call me to meet an old friend of his. I was at the counter when Stephy hijacked my drink.
“Have you found some new friends and ditched us already?"
“Where would I ever get another concerned soul like you?"
“Then why are you here at the bar alone instead of joining our table? Come on."
She dragged me across the hall to where they were sitting and talking.
“The next Charity Gala will be held at CnR, how exciting for us all," Laurea said excitedly.
At my arrival Jos stood up to excuse herself. My heart sank, but before she left she said hello to me. I took the seat next to hers as the MC of the event introduced Malcom to the stage. That's when I saw her hand in hand with her cousin with her cheerful smile. They both gave a wonderful speech and thanked every one for their donations. I had somebody I wanted to introduce her to, someone that'll probably put a smile on her face.
“Hey Jos, there's someone I want you to meet."
She hesitated at first but followed me anyway.
“Mrs Rosita I would like you to meet Jossie Cartwright."
“Hello Nicholas dear, how's your mother?"
“She's doing great and she is somewhere among the throng of people."
Jossie was still dumbstruck. Mrs Rosita was a renowned author, famously know for her book, The Magnolia Series.
“It is such a pleasure to meet you. I am a big fan of your work, The Magnolia Series to be precise. Now I'm actually wondering whether Rowena will find the ruby her grandma left for her."
“I am not at liberty to answer that but if you let me use your library space for the debut of the fifth and final series of the book, you will definitely find out."
“Omg! Are you being serious?"
“Yes, I've been wracking my brains all week as to where it would take place but when Nicholas here mentioned your place, I thought why not."
“It is such a big honor, thank you so much."
“My editor will be in touch, see you in a week's time Jossie."
She turned to me and gave me a small smile and a thank you before excusing herself. I am sure she had gone to share the news with the rest. I know this was not going to make up completely for the pain I've caused her but at least it was a start. I saw Kristen approach me with an angry look.
“You couldn't tell me that Jossie was your best friend's cousin?"
“Does it scare you now that you know she is from a very powerful family?"
“Nothing scares me in this life Nick, you should know that."
“I am not so sure of that anymore Kris. You've been running scared ever since you found out I left you."
She gave me a stern look before stomping away. When I looked up I found myself staring at Jossie. I couldn't read her expression from where I was but I hoped she read into the situation clearly.
“You know my cousin would rather hurt than talk about what's bothering her to anyone."
Malcom. That was the first time since the night started that we'd had a chance to say something to each other.
“I am figuring that on my own as time goes by."
“That's the reason why I am not pummeling you to a pulp right now for hurting her that much."
I looked right into his eyes and saw seriousness there. I don't blame him cause if I were in his place, he would be getting the same reaction.
“I'm trying to do things right by her, I just hope I'm not too late."
He clasped my shoulder tightly and gave it a squeeze.
“I want you both happy man. I'll see you later bro."
I was left there in deep thoughts. People had started clearing the party. I called my driver to pick me up front. Today would have been one of those days that the squad and I hit the club to continue the celebrations but the atmosphere wasn't really that condusive for reasons that we all seemed to telepathically understand. It was alright because at the end of it all I had a feeling that something incredible would happen that would bring us all together like old times.
