She kissed the top of my head, "Tell me what happened, JJ, you gotta get it out."
I sighed, "Do you think I'm good at my job?"
"What? You know I think you're very good at your job... There's no way in hell I could ever do what you do. Did... Did someone say you aren't good at your job? Do I need to fight someone again?"
I chuckled a little bit through my tears, "I think you're strong, Em, but Derek might be a match for you."
"Derek? What'd that hot-head say?"
I leaned up a little bit and wiped my tears away, "Well..." I told her the whole story, even including details of the case, "... and then when I was talking to Derek about what happened it totally sounded like he was blaming me! Like? Why? It was Reid who suggested we split up! So why do I have to take the blame?" At this point I was pacing around our bedroom as Emily stayed seated in bed.
"You're right, it's definitely not your fault."
"Right?! So what the hell?"
"I don't know, Jayje, I—"
I cut her off with my rambling, "And then at one point he said 'The truth is one of you is here, and one of you isn't.' Like, is that supposed to mean he's pissed that it was me who didn't get taken? What was he implying with that?"
"He said that?"
"Yeah!"
"That dick. I should kick his ass."
I sighed and climbed back into bed, "It's fine. It's all in the past."
"Still pisses me off."
"Me too, but... I'll get over it and I'm sure he will too." I draped a leg over Emily's waist and wrapped my arm around her abdomen. I brushed my hair out of the way before laying my head on her chest. I snuggled into it and inhaled her scent, letting it relax me.
Once I stopped squirming, Emily giggled, "Comfy?"
I blushed, "Very comfy."
She kissed my forehead and mumbled against my skin, "How's that arm?"
I softly said, slightly pouty, "It hurts."
Emily chuckled and replied in a baby voice, "Awww, my wittle baby." I laughed softly as she continued, "Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Just hold me."
"I can do that."
The next morning
— Emily's POV
"Mommy! Mommy!" Henry burst through our door this morning at the crack of dawn, immediately jumping onto our bed and catching JJ in a sloppy kiss.Still drowsy from just waking up, she mumbled, "Henry what are you doing up? It's not even 6:30 yet."
He crawled under the covers with us, "Becawse yer home!"
I winced as his bare feet came in contact with my leg, "Ah! Jesus, his feet are freezing!"
He giggled and pounced on top of me, "Hi Emmy!"
Now a little more conscious, I chuckled, "Hi little man... What's got you so chipper this morning?"
"Mommy's home!"
"I see that, bud." I whispered to him, "How about we go make Mommy some breakfast in bed, hmm?"
"Yeah!" He wrapped his arms around my neck as I sat up in bed in preparation to get up. I turned to JJ who was curled up on her side and likely drifting back to sleep. I carried Henry downstairs to the kitchen and sat him on the stool by the counter.
I asked him, "What should we make for her?"
"Mommy likes da waffles wit da stwabewwies."
"Ooh that's right, I think we can do that." I plugged the waffle maker in to get it ready before pouring the waffle mix into a large bowl. I grabbed a spatula and handed it to Henry, "Can you stir it for me?" He nodded and got to work, talking a mile a minute through the whole process. As he went on and on about daycare adventures and conversations with Uncle Spencer and the last episode of Paw Patrol he watched, I cut the strawberries, warmed up the syrup, put on a pot of coffee, and poured Henry some OJ. After about 15 minutes, the entire ordeal was done. I placed everything neatly onto a tray and then walked upstairs with Henry.
He slowly opened the door and saw that JJ was awake before saying, "Mommy we made you bweakfast!"
She set her phone down and stretched, "You did?" She gasped when she saw the tray and sat up in bed as I carried it over. I sat next to her and Henry cuddled between us with his juice. JJ and I noshed on the food and made quiet conversation with each other as Henry watched TV.
She glanced over at the clock after a while and groaned, "Ugh. I don't wanna go in today. I'm dreading seeing Morgan."
"Want me to drive you? I can come upstairs with you... Say hi to everyone, maybe it'll take the edge off."
"Sure, babe... Don't say anything to him though, about what we talked about."
"I promise." After we finished eating, I helped Henry get dressed as JJ stayed in our room to get ready for work. Once we were all set I grabbed my keys and we started the commute to Quantico. Once we got there, I parked the car and carried Henry inside to drop him off at daycare. JJ waited for me by the elevator and we both headed upstairs after I walked over to her.
She asked me, "Do you think he'll still be mad at me?"
I sighed, "I don't know, honey, we'll have to wait and see." The elevator opened on the sixth floor and Penelope just happened to be passing by right at that moment.
"Oh my gosh! Sugarplum, how are you feeling? How's your arm?"
JJ chuckled and said, "It's a lot better, Pen, and it probably won't scar either."
"Ugh, that's a shame— some battle scars from your badass dog fight would be kinda hot."
I smirked, "I think she's hot enough, Pen." JJ elbowed me in the side and led me inside.
Hotch greeted me as we approached JJ's desk, "Emily, it's good to see you!"
"Likewise, Hotch. I'll be out of your hair in a few minutes, don't worry, I just wanted to keep an extra eye on JJ today because of your case yesterday. I hope everyone else is feeling okay?" I saw Derek make his way over to join the conversation.
Hotch replied, "Yeah the rest of the team is all right, but JJ certainly took a beating as did Reid. We're just happy they're both back safely."
"Of course. JJ came home last night pretty distraught so... I can only imagine what it must have been like at the time," I saw Derek guiltily look down at the floor. I added, "I could never do what you guys do, seriously."
Derek joked, "And none of us could be trusted in diagnosing children, so you've got us beat there."
I laughed and said my goodbyes to JJ, "I'll pick you up later, baby, have a good day," before kissing her quickly and heading back to the elevator.
— JJ's POV
After Emily left the BAU, Hotch headed back to his office and Penelope talked to me for a few minutes until she retreated to her tech lair. I sighed and sat down at my desk to get to work, but felt a light tap on my shoulder before I could start working."Hey, blondie," Derek said to me softly as he sat down on my desk.
"Hey, Morgan."
He looked down at the floor and mumbled, "I just wanted to um... to talk to you about yesterday. I-I'm sorry for what I said, I think I was just wound up because I was worried about Reid and-and I know that it wasn't easy for you either. It uh... it wasn't your fault... and I'm glad you're okay."
I smiled at him and stood up to give him a hug, "Thanks, Derek. It was a rough case for everyone, no hard feelings." I sat back down as he started to head back to his desk.
"Oh, and JJ?" I whipped my head back around to him as he said, "Don't tell Reid I said I was worried about him."
