Chapter 9

After all of us leaving the park with Z crystals, we walked through the tunnel in the direction of Mallow's trial. All of us trained on the way and Blaze evolved into a Torracat and Rowlet evolved into Dartrix. We challenged all of the trainers and in double battles it was clear that Gladion and I were an unstoppable team. I felt bad because I knew Gladion loved me and I loved him back but I had to stay focused on becoming champion and then worry about Gladion. But he tried very hard to not act like we were together and I felt really guilty for making him try that hard. I loved him but I needed to stay focused. Being champion was more important than Gladion. my heart disagreed with that statement very much. We all arrived outside of Mallow's trial and I offered for Lillie to go first. She nodded determinedly and walked in with Snowy at her side. Hau was eating malasadas and and I sat down by the rocks to watch the rolling ocean waves. Gladion sat down next to me and my heart started to thump with longing. 
     "Hey Noni? D-do you have a crush on anyone?" Gladion asked nervously and I decided to tell him the truth. I took a deep breath and faced him.
     "I love you, Gladion. You're the one who I love." He gasped and I continued my heart shattering as I said these horrible words. "But I can't be with you. I want to stay focused on the island challenge because that was my goal when I came here." His face fell and he turned away from me. "I want to be with you but I can't. Maybe after I become champion then we can be together but not right now." I said as my heart shattered. "Goodbye Gladion." I said as my voice shook and I walked away, tears spilling from my eyes. Lillie came out if the forest with no Z crystal and Gladion strode in with a heartbroken look to his face that he tried to cover up with determination. Lillie noticed my tears and Gladion's face and walked over to me.
     "Noni? What's wrong? Why does Gladion look heartbroken?" She asked concerned.
     "Did you pass the trial?" I croaked. She shook her head and rubbed my back to comfort me. "I confessed to Gladion that I loved him..but then I told him that being champion was more important than him and I just ruined everything!" I sobbed and Lillie comforted me.
     "Why did you tell him that?" She asked.
     "Because my goal is to be champion and I was taught that feelings create weakness so I tried my hardest to not fall in love with him but it clearly worked out." I said sarcastically and flumped my head onto my legs.
     "And Gladion loves you back, right?" I nodded and she sighed. "This is the first time he's ever fallen in love so he's very nervous and you've broke him." I stood up and rage pooled in my gut.
     "Don't you think I know that?! I just ruined the best thing that's ever happened to me and now I just broke someone I loved!" I screamed at Lillie and Gladion walked out from the forest right as I said those words. He rushed to protect Lillie.
     "Back away from her, Noni." He growled and tears streamed down my face.
     "I don't know what I ever saw in you!" I yelled at him with tears streaming down my face and ran off into the forest.
