When the plane finally landed in New York, I was exhausted. I didn't get any sleep as I thought I would. My mind was occupied by enormous number of thoughts, and I couldn't eat properly in the morning either. That meaning I was starving to death by the time I got my suitcase. I was in the worst place mentally I have ever been in my life, and you could see that on my face, on my moves and on my way of walking. I never considered myself famous however I was hoping no fans were waiting for me in the arrival lobby. Don't get me wrong I love our fans, I just, I didn't have the energy for fake smiles and small talks.
As I was approaching the arrival area, I could spot my bandmates waiting for me with a handmade sign with my name on it. We were friends since our freshman year. It's kind of a funny story and maybe you are even interested in it. And even if you are not, I will tell in anyway.
When we moved to New York I started attending high school. My freshman year. I knew zero people there. Are you having the main character in a coming-of-age movie vibes? Because I didn't. I was on a verge of tears. The first person I have met was Veronica Smith. She was a freshman too and somehow knew everything about our school. Later I found out she was the daughter of the headmistress. She helped me a lot in the first few weeks. She was my only friend, and I was also her only friend. We had most of the classes together and music class was one of them. I loved that class we had an amazing teacher who was encouraging us to do better. Thanks to her I became a better base player and even started writing my own songs. I've found out Veronica is a brilliant singer. Her voice was amazing.
Once Miss Paxton, our music teacher, assigned us a group work which would make fifty percent of our final grade. I ended up in a group with Veronica, Olivia, Julie and Harriet. I didn't know many things about these girls all I knew was:
•Olivia Afify - super sporty, plays guitar, tall, blue-haired
•Julie Watanabe - artsy, plays piano, quiet
•Harriet Fletcher - popular, rich, looks like a mean girl, plays drums(shocking)This particular group project was to rehears a song. Any song we would like to. We chatted during lunchbreak about what we will do nevertheless our first meeting was Friday after school at Harriet's house. Olivia was late because of her basketball practice. Veronica wasn't much thrilled about it. She liked when everything was going according to plan. Atmosphere was weirdly tense until...
"What song would you like to play? I don't know what kind of songs and genres are you into so we could firstly start with that. For me it is any song with great drumming." Harriet broke the awkward silence with a genuine smile. I was starting to like her. She brought us food and that was a big plus too.
"I like anything that has a good vibe and a splendid work with lyrics. Although I was wondering if we could do an original song. I'm new into song writing but maybe you have something up your sleeves." I suggested hoping a song writing genius was among us. While I was looking at the group of people I barely knew when I heard a sweet melodic voice.
"I've been working on a few songs. I started one about us. It's just in process and I don't know you much. Maybe we could try to finish it together." These words came out of Julies mouth. It was the first time I've heard her talk for so long. Everybody was looking at her with a bit of surprise mixed with excitement. I reckon they were thing the same thing as I. Song about us? We have spoken two times. It turned out that Julie was a great observer.
We did finish that song together. It was our first song called 'Better than Ever'. It was a simple tune about friendship between five girls, but Miss Paxton thought it was worth the school talent show. We all knew these kinds of shows were, how to put it nicely? Awful? Dreadful? Horrific? All of it combined? We attended just to please her, and our parents were proud too for some reason. To our surprise one of the parents sitting in the auditorium was a music producer and you can guess the rest of the story easily. I nearly forgot to tell you how we named our band. It's 'The Popsicles'. Really cool right. Please, don't ask me about the deeper meaning of it. There isn't one. We just thought it sounded awesome.
After this experience we grew closer and became good friends. I can tell you what I know about those girls now:
•Veronica 'Vee' Smith - sings like an angel, manager, can get you anything you want no matter where it is, smarty-pants, mom of the group, pretty funny
•Olivia 'Livi' Afify - best guitarist, can basically play any riff and any sport, loves to colour her hair, looks like she could kill you is a cinnamon roll, loves dad jokes, partner in crime so is down to anything that involves trouble
•Julie 'Julsome' Watanabe - songwriter of our generation, plays the piano like a virtuoso, emotional plant-mom, looks like a cinnamon roll is a cinnamon roll, bit shy but in the right company is wildin, always has a good advice at hand
•Harriet 'Big Money' Fletcher - DRUMS, could buy you an island if you wanted to, sarcastic queen, looks like she could kill would kill you, protective af of her loved ones, best dressed and best make up, loves Hallmark movies
Now we are on a needed break from touring and writing music. We decided not to renew our contract due to many reasons but mainly for mental health issues.Starting a career at 15 is literally the worst time. Life is hard at that time even when you are not considerate famous. I've had hard time understanding that even though you do everything right there will always be someone who will hate on you or will not be satisfied. I received lots of hate from people I didn't know because they didn't like how my voice sounded, thought I couldn't sing, couldn't dance and been body shamed. I couldn't understand how they could be so mean. How could they benefit from someone's pain? I still don't however with therapy I could find a way of coping with hate. Tabloids had written something completely untrue about my appointments although I was no ashamed of seeking help when I needed it.
I looked around to see any signs of fans and saw just these girls standing right in front of me helped me a lot, too. I don't think I would still be part of the band. As I was approaching them, I screamed and started running towards them, my suitcase making it harder than I thought it would be. They screamed my name and ran towards me, and we all ended in a group hug.
