It was almost 6pm. Everybody was already at our house. We were in our fancy clothes sitting on couch waiting for The Dinner to be served. Liz and Blake were on the other side of couch talking about something. He looked bit nervous and had a good reason for it. Meeting parents of your girlfriend for the first time is one thing but meeting them with another completely unknown family on their biggest day of the year is a different thing. On the other hand, Liz was shining. She was excited to introduce him to her parents for the first time. He is quite charming, so it was easy for him to make a good first impression. He even mesmerized my parents.

The only person who was still giving him dirty looks from time to time was Harrison. He was sitting right next to me dressed in white shirt and suit pants. I had to say he looked rather charming in it. But it could be just because of the white shirt. Isn't that like every girl's weakness?

"Hey, when are you returning to New York?" The blond next to me interrupted my thoughts.

"Hmm? Back to New York? In two days." I completely forgot I have to go back and face reality again. "Why are you asking?"

"I was just curious if you are not flying back the same day as me." Same day as him? What the hell? It took me a while to find the piece of information about his internship in New York.

"Oh my God! I completely forgot. You must tell me about it. It would be nice to have a fellow Brit around." It would really be nice to hear my native language more often. But just when he opened his mouth to tell me more about it, my mom called us for The Dinner.

"I promise I will tell about it. Something is telling me that they won't be paying much attention to us anyway." He said while motioning his head towards the couple.

He was right. We were sitting in kitchen and eating for almost an hour now. I was asked two questions in total and I don't think they were acknowledging Harrisons presence at all. However, it did not bother us. I finally got some information about his work in New York.

"I have my flight next week and I should be there for one semester. It's basically like my uni here even though NYU is NYU and awesome opportunity."

"That is amazing, Harrison! Wow. It's like a dream come true for you." I remember him talking about NYU few times when I came over, but he didn't want to be so far away from his family. They have really friendly relationship with his family members. "Will you not miss your family? I know how it is to be away from them for a long time and it isn't the best feeling in world."

"I know I will but if I want to be and actor, I have to take opportunities like this. And I was somehow hoping you will be my mentor there."

"The big Harrison Osterfield wants me to be his mentor? Is this some kind of dream?" I said with my most overreacting voice that I could pull off. Harrison just rolled his eyes with hidden amusement. "I cannot say no to this chance of being in charge of your life. So I'm saying yes. Mr. Osterfield I will be your mentor. No. No. I will be your rabbi." I was enjoying every moment of my heart-warming speech.

"I'm already regretting this. You are having too much fun." Regret on his face was visible but I was already in too deep in my role.

"Who? Me? I'm just trying to be a good rabbi, my dear savant." Far too deep in it. "First rule you have to follow is not eating anything from the ground. I know ground is your favourite plate, but New York is dirty, and you could catch a bad disease. Rule number two is about their language. If they call you a fucking colonizer you will just nod and spill your hot tea in their face. Third and the most important rule is that your rabbi is always right. Even when you think they are not, in fact they are. These are, my dear follower, three ground rules and more will be added further in the future." I ended up my speech with a dramatic sip from my teacup.

Harrison was left speechless. I didn't know if it was because he was amazed or terrified by me. However, the smile on his face was showing he had fun at least. "When did you become this funny?"

"I was always this funny. You just never paid attention to it."

"The Kate I remember was a shy girl who said barely two full sentences to me." He was right. I was a shy kid and now I'm more extroverted and talkative, but I've always possessed a great sense of humour.

"Well, I changed a lot since the last time we spoke was nearly four years ago. And even then, we weren't the bestest friends. Nevertheless, I like this thing between us. Me being a rabbi and you being my servant."

"You mean apprentice. And I like this thing between us too. You know the friendship. Who would have thought that we would connect through our failed relationships?" He said while raising his teacup. "To our failed relationships!"

"To our failed relationships!" I did the same as him and we both laughed at our miserable situation.

"Kids, prepare yourself we are going to take family Christmas photos." My mom cut off our fun. I hate photoshoots. I had few with my band and I think I look terrible everywhere. That's the reason why I don't have any magazines featuring our band. Family photos are even worse, and my parents have them all framed at home.

"You know what would be fun?" Harrison asked. He must have seen the tragic look on my face. "As you can see, we are the only ones who doesn't have a significant other." I started to understand when he was going with this. "We could act like a couple in the photos. You know just for humour reasons. Like a parody." He looked like he got the best plan since the invention of a steam engine.

At first, I thought it was the dumbest idea I have heart in a while. After a while I was like fuck lets have fun instead and I agreed to his idea.

First, we took few normal photos for the pleasure of our parents and then we went full cheesy-every-second-couple-on-instagram-these-days poses. Even though we got some weird looks from our family members it was absolutely hilarious. Afterwards we both sat on sofa again. Watched some Christmas Hallmark movie and talked about how the premise is so unpredictable and unique.

"Thank you for having us." said the Osterfield family when they were leaving our household. Liz was still a ray of happiness and told me to come over tomorrow and we would discuss everything that happened today. Blake looked more confident and was thanking my parents.

"Thank you for making this more bearable, rabbi." Harrison said while giving me a hug. This surprised me but was so sweet of him.

"You are welcome my apprentice. Don't forget about the three ground rules and learn them by heart."

"I will." He said while leaving our doorway.

"Do you have anything with Harrison?" Mom asked me when we were cleaning after The Dinner.

"What? No. How could even ask that?" How could she think that? He is Liz's brother and I have enough guys for now.

"I don't know. You seemed pretty close to me."

"It was because you were all ignoring us, and he was the only person I could talk to today. Don'tworry mom if I would have any other boyfriend you would be the first to know.By the way, this dinner you cooked was just delicious." I changed the subject quickly to draw her attention to something else and it worked.
