His ears rung as the bombardment of bullets flew overhead. The high-pitch tones ran to his brain and he scrunched up his nose whilst keeping his eyes open as best he could, too well trained to remove even a single hand from his weapon.

The helmet strapped to his head did near to nothing to block out the reverberating of enemy gunshots. His goggles were removed hours before it came to be the dead of night. The aching of his muscles from firefights and combat had begun to set in as he waited seemingly endlessly to fire back.

He shifted his head as missed shots fired sand towards his eyes. The trench and singular surviving weapon proved to be his only company as his teammates had already made their move. He'd already cursed himself for opting to remain behind to serve as the rear-guard alone but chose to do it again.

"Shit!" he shouted under his breath, gritting his teeth together as a frustration born from his own choices washed over him.

An unexpected shifting of sand caught his protected ears. The SA80 rifle cradled in his arms marked its rapidly approaching target and kept its scoped trained on the figure, even as it raised its arms as high as it could given the trench's height constrictions.

"Friendly! Friendly!" The newcomer identified, even going as far as to present the red, white, and blue Union Jack flag stitched into the camouflage uniforms' shoulder.

"Christ, Church!" he loudly muttered, aiming his gun away as he dropped his defences. He returning his attention to the gunfire coming from behind.

"'Christ, Church?' Very funny." he repeated, sinking next to him and adjusting his helmet as he did so. "We've known each other for how long? Haven't I earned the title of 'Furlan' yet? It's not like I call you by your last name!"

The soldier scoffed to himself but Farlan very clearly noticed. "What the hell are you doing here!?" he shouted over the bullets whizzing past. "You're in a different squad!"

"I heard you stayed behind! Thought you could use the backup for when you get yelled at by Colonel stick-up-his-arse for taking too long! Oh, and for this!" he pointed his thumb towards the one-sided battlefield.

"How'd you get here!?" he didn't care for Furlan's jokes as much as he did learning how he managed to sneak around the enemy.

In the shroud of darkness, he managed to catch the toothy smirk sent his way. Furlan poked his head the way he'd originally come. "I'll show you! Unless you wanna wait around here getting shot at! Your choice!"

He had already squat down lower than before and had begun heading in Furlan's direction, resulting in a smile on his comrade's expression. He turned, heading back the way he came with his friend and comrade in tow. Hundreds of bullets were fired in their area, too fast for them to return fire.

They crouched their way around the enemy as if they were playing a dangerous game of hide and seek or cat and mouse. Their eyes remained stuck on the escape path. They weren't ones to pray and never would. It hadn't worked for them before and they doubted it ever would.

A raspy groan escaped his throat. His face scrunched up as the sunlight crept through the blinds, attacking his senses as if it were an alarm clock. His fatigue-ridden body stretched, flexing his muscles and shooting a wave of euphoria through him. Bringing his fingers to his face, they rubbed the sleep out of the corners of his eyes that struggle to adjust to the invading sunrays.

A deep breath later and he found himself lifting his topless form out from underneath his white sheets. Bare feet touched the bedrooms' carpet. The side of the bed sunk under his combined weight and poor posture as he slumped his head into his hands. He stayed still, letting his body naturally adapt to the morning changes.
