It was ten o'clock at night. Eren and Mikasa hadn't been picked up from school. They'd stayed behind with the teachers until they'd overheard talks of calling the police. Eren dragged Mikasa out of the school until the girl learned to walk by herself. She didn't steal her hand from Eren's grip.
The two children, aged twelve, accumulated enough spare change from their backpacks to get the bus. The riders sent them strange looks but kept to themselves, not daring to approach the angry boy armed with the much more frightening black-haired girl beside him.
The two's journey took longer than expected. Mikasa lost consciousness and fell asleep, her head resting on her watchful brother's shoulder. Eren paid her no mind, used to her clinginess.
Eren shook her from his joint. Someone else had rung the bell at their stop, coincidentally. Eren wasn't sure how to stop the bus since he'd never been on one before.
He appreciated the good luck, however, the rage he felt for his parents' absence burned on. He took his anger out on Mikasa, forcing her off the public vehicle since she'd yet to awake properly.
Darkness had started to settle, blanketing the night sky in black. Hints of stars began to pierce through the dark. Eren ignored them, focused solely on dishing out his wrath on his parents.
His father he understood. Grisha worked long unpredictable hours at the hospital working as a doctor. Carla on the other hand spent her days taking care of the house, always picking them both up from school in the car due to the distance. They would have been home sooner if the school cared less about their safety.
They rounded the corner to their street, immediately seeing a less than common occurrence. Flashing blue lights lightened the neighbourhood. Their sirens coloured the canvas sky and broke the silence.
Neighbours watched the event via their windows and their doorsteps. Eren and Mikasa walked by, gaining concerned tear filled looks from the sudden audience.
Mikasa recognised the police first, having dealt in their company longer than Eren had. The boy remembered his previous encounter years ago, the day he'd helped save the life of his sister.
He didn't like them then and didn't like them now. Eren feared as to why there were so many of them. Cars and a black van decorated with 'PRIVATE AMBULANCE' on its sides encompassed the street.
Eren gasped. He spied his family's lawn they stood on, conversing among themselves. He saw his house standing tall, the curtains pulled back allowed him to partially see his bedroom.
He and Mikasa angled around the cars to see their front door wide open, officers trekking in and out. They crouched behind the blue and yellow transport, hidden from view.
A tall well-dressed grey suited man with neatly made blonde hair exited the Jaeger household. On his tail was a much shorter man similar in age.
Unlike the blonde, his hair was as dark as Mikasa's. He shared comparable features with her too. His uniform was black. A vest protected his front whilst holding police equipment. Both men were disturbed, the blonde more so than the second man.
They faced each other, the detective looking down to meet the officer's eyes. "What do you make of it?" the blonde asked.
The officer turned back to the scene indoors. "It's not a burglary, she isn't dressed for it."
"Good. What else?" the detective pressed, testing the new recruit.
The rookie officer kept his gears turning in thought, analysing the horrific scene to piece together the possibilities. "Maybe an argument went south? The other woman attacked the two homeowners because of it."
