Hospitals were renowned for being busy places. Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff alike ran from floor to floor, wing to wing, dealing out medicine and healthcare. Patients ailing from various injuries and illnesses were wheeled back and forth in different directions.
Hectic environments invited noise. Whether it was doctors barking orders or patients screaming in pain, noise travelled unhindered throughout the building.
Silence was a rarely found indulgence in the vast structure, always interrupted by the call to help.
However, Levi was a challenger. He broke the rules and constructed them to fit his needs. He ploughed through barriers while others cowered behind them, terrified to break the mould.
Levi jumped at the opportunity to prove others wrong, forever wearing an uninterested face masking satisfaction.
The room housing himself and Eren suffered not from violent sound. Outside the room, the ringing phones and shuffling papers alongside indistinct conversations didn't affect the room's ambience.
Levi's expert ears hear the machine beside Eren lightly buzzing. Eren's fingers tugged at the duvet. Levi heard them rustle on top of the patient.
He'd recounted his story, the worst event of his life to date. He despised reliving it and as such tried not to. The memory merged with previous traumas during his dreams. They wound up displaying the horrific scene before he woke up.
It tortured the veteran's mind but he'd grown used to it over the years. He'd learnt to control the emotions the memories enticed.
It was the looks others gave him that he struggled to handle. Erwin knew, he told him. Hanji eventually found out too.
Erwin's stunned expression, slack-jawed with eyebrows tugged so high they threatened to sprout wings from their bushy cocoons and fly off, plagued his brain. Hanji's glasses had slipped down her nose almost comedically. She'd been too invested to readjust them.
He saw similar attributes in Eren. The boy was naturally curious yet so inexperienced. He barely understood the world, only seeing it for the rotten shit it spewed.
Levi had seen what beauty it could make as well as what monstrosities could poison those beautiful creations.
His mouth was agape, catching metaphorical flies. Eren's pupils were dilated larger than any response to drugs possessed. His loose gown had fallen from his shoulders, leaving his upper torso bare.
His bruised ribs were visible to Levi. Thin patchy hair decorated his frail chest. Levi ignored everything but Eren's expression, an undisguisable response to Levi's history.
Words were lost on the two. Levi, finished with his piece, faltered to speak. The same problem affected Eren, the young man terrorised by Levi's tale.
It sounded fake, like a fictional plot in a film and not something that could happen in real life. The world Levi lived in was too far separated from Eren's tame reality.
Levi enjoyed silence he controlled. Having people in a state of shock too scared to speak ruined his grasp. He continued adding details Eren hadn't asked for to break the unnerving silence.
"Eld took charge after that. I never asked him to... He called our Colonel to explain the situation. We were recalled from our post, replaced by a cleaning team that covered it up." Levi explained, his voice disconcertingly toneless.
"For getting involved in local politics and executing non-military combatants all four of us were dishonourably discharged. We were given a court order to never speak of what happened and in return, we'd avoid jail time."
