Mail day. A rare occurrence for the group of soldiers, unlike their previous peers. Their station resided far in enemy territory. Two soldiers took it upon themselves to head out to gather the mail delivered at a secure meet point.
Both kept an eye on their partner's backs. In the event of an attack, one would return to base for reinforcements. Eld and Gunther, two dedicated soldiers clad in beige shalwar kameez and a pakol hat to further hide their caucasian skin, entered the base with a sack over Gunther's shoulder.
"Post service!" Eld cheered.
Gunther shred himself of the hat, shaking free the loose threads from his hair. "Hate this stuff. They ain't got denim out here?"
Eld snorted. "Not out here."
A third presence entered their conversation. "You two took your time." the man stated with folded arms and a scowl.
He wore standard camouflage trousers with a white tank top for a shirt, presenting his bicep muscles to the two. The two soldiers snickered at their comrade's poor imitation. Gunther dropped the sack on the floor. It landed lightly, practically empty.
"You know you sound nothing like him, right?" Gunther asked rhetorically.
"Seriously, man," Eld added. "You two are nothing alike."
The third 'tched' in the same manner their superior did. "I'm more like him than your two girls. Nice dresses by the way."
"Thanks. Next time you can wear it." retorted Eld.
"You know. You talk a lot of shit for a man named after a cookie." Gunther's comment dragged laughter from Eld. Oruo's eye twitched.
"I think you ticked him off." Eld failed to discourage his enjoyment.
"Whatever," Oruo growled in the same register his military superior did. "What did I get?"
"The fuck should we know? We didn't check. We just grabbed it and booked it." Gunther informed him.
"Good. Wouldn't want to guys reading my stuff anyway." replied Oruo.
He tore open the bag, finding only three letters inside. He rummaged through the bag's small contents, reading names until he found his own. He ignored Eld and Gunther, focusing solely on the letter.
He tore open the white envelope with military stamps plastered on the paper. He read it silently with his back to the two. They watched as the man's shoulders dipped occasionally. Quiet sniffles echoed between the three.
"Uhh, all good?" Gunther asked, freaked out more than worried.
Slowly, Oruo turned to encounter them, tears in his eyes and snot dribbling from his nostrils. Eld and Gunther recoiled in disgust at their friend's horrific expression.
"M-my little brother...he's started primary school," he confessed, crying as he did so.
The two men shared a look, nodding simultaneously. Family. Their lives continued back in England, progressing in their own unique ways. Gunfire had a way of silencing everything else in life.
"That's great, bro," Eld spoke first.
"You must be proud." Gunther followed.
Both soldiers approached Oruo, stepping around the bag with their respective letters inside. Oruo extended his arms for a hug, the insults previously passed between the three forgotten.
