The last place Levi wanted to be was back at work. There wasn't any place he wished to be. Eren was still at the hospital receiving treatment in the ICU in the form of multiple vital monitoring machines and a comfy bed Levi couldn't provide.
The quietness of his home overwhelmed his senses. He kept waiting for Eren to ask him a stupid question or for the smell of smoke to assault his nostrils. Neither happened.
Thoughts of Hanji and Petra ran rampant in his mind. The hurt tone Hanji used to call out to him filled him with guilt. At the time, he was too wrapped up in anger to notice, however, as he looked back on the memory, it was all he could remember.
Since the surprise visit to the park, Levi hadn't heard from her and according to Erwin, that was by choice on her part.
Petra shared a similar story. She'd learnt little facts about Levi's past life and present issues unknowingly. Unlike Hanji, Petra was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders as she balanced a new difficult job with conflicting morals, all things Levi related to.
But, instead of guiding her through this difficult journey, he bit her head off. His orders sickened his conscious yet he hadn't reached out.
His apologies lacked sincerity and given the recent developments in his life, he doubted he could bring himself to say the phrase at all.
He knew he stunk. Showering seemed like a luxury he didn't deserve while Eren lay still on a hospital bed in an ugly blue gown surrounded by strangers and professionals.
Levi trusted them to do their jobs to the best of their abilities but they weren't gods. If it happened to be Eren's time, there was nothing anyone could do.
He'd exhausted himself to sleep, viewing himself as underserving of a showering, food and social interactions. His stomach growled out of hunger, pleading for something to settle it. Levi ignored its protests, chugging down a beer which it did not agree with.
Par Eren's supposed sister, no one else knew of his predicament, meaning Levi had to suffer alone. An occurrence he had grown familiar with. At the very least, he trudged upstairs before passing out in his bed.
Levi awoke in the middle of the day again to a ringing phone. A horrific sense of déjà vu raised his adrenaline levels.
The off-duty officer leapt out of bed, clambering for his phone. His eyes struggled to adjust and when they did, they found Erwin's contact details exhibited on his screen alongside the option to answer or deny the incoming call.
Reluctantly, he accepted the call after having let it ring a few more times. During which, he used to catch his breath, glad that it wasn't the hospital who he presumed had saved his number in case something happened to Eren.
Despite Mikasa being their immediate go-to caller as she was his emergency contact, he imagined himself encountering a call if they believed Eren was actually his casework priority.
Levi failed to pay complete attention to Erwin's call. He listened to Erwin asking him to come into work as soon as possible, a request he'd never been asked before.
He'd quickly thrown on a grey hoodie and black jeans, an outfit that screamed 'I'm here and wish I weren't', especially when combined with a barren expression and slacked posture.
He rounded the corner, closing in on Erwin's office. Officers and other members of staff sent him bizarre looks, clearly stunned by his presence.
No doubt their reactions stemmed from his verbal berating of Petra and shouting match with Erwin. He presumed the entire station was aware of what had transpired by now.
