NEEL RAMAKRISHNAN
I drove towards the hospital like a mad man. On my way to the hospital my phone was ringing continuously. It was a conference call by Shaurya and Varun.
Dr Shaurya Desai as you all know is my family friend and college mate. We went to Harvard medical school together and we were roommates. Varun I mean Dr Varun Tandon was also our roommate. He was a year senior to us. We are quite close. Every Saturday we make it a point to do conference call. Varun is a cardiologist and cardio thoracic surgeon just like me and Shaurya is an oncologist aka cancer specialist.
Both Shaurya and Varun work in the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Varun is the head of the cardiology department and Shaurya is the head of the oncology department and they both are the best in their fields and are doing quite well. They help me in managing the MedLife branch in Boston and keep checking everything there on my behalf.
I didn't answer the call all I wanted now was my dad to be fine. I wanted to see him. At last after half an hour of torturous drive I reached MedLife Hospital. I ran upstairs. I saw Naitik anna pacing back an forth outside OT , Subbu uncle and Arun were standing quietly and mom was sitting on the chair she was very upset and Neeti and Akshara manni were comforting her.
She didn't shed any drop of tear. That's my mom for you she never cries in front of anyone, never shows her true emotions to anyone but dad knows her inside out and I've got it all from her. It mus be so difficult for her to see dad like this. A person who has given all his life treating other people and saving their lives and making it better now he himself is fighting for his life inside the OT. Who knew that we would have to see this day too.
I asked, "Naitik anna where is appa? How is he doing? What happened?"
Naitik anna said, "he was having his filter coffee as usual around 4:30pm and reading his newspaper and suddenly he started breathing heavily and complained of chest pain. I was sitting beside him. I made him drink water as soon as he drank water he fainted. We rushed to the hospital and asked for you but the staff said you haven't come here since morning. I was wondering where you must have gone as you left home pretty early in the morning. Luckily Dr Santosh Iyengar was here so he checked dad immediately and took a few tests and said there's a block inside his heart and they'll have to perform the angioplasty so just half an hour ago they took him to the OT. Where were you Neel we've been trying to reach you since two freaking hours? We were so damn worried you have no idea."
I said, "I...I woh mai kisi zaruri kaam mein fass gaya tha aur mujhe koi distractions nahi chahiye tha isiliye Maine phone silent pe rakha tha. Sorry." Naitik anna just shook his head.
(I had some important work to do and I didn't want any distractions so I had kept phone on silent. Sorry.)
I went and hugged my mom tightly and whispered in her ears, "it's going to be ok, he's strong." She just cupped my cheeks and nodded.
I hugged Neeti and wiped her tears.
I said, "don't cry twinnie he'll be fine."
Neeti said, "I was so scared Neel the moment Akshu manni called me and informed me I froze on the spot it was as if I'll be the next one to get an attack."
I said, "hey don't say such things and please relax. He's going to be ok and back in action very soon. Stop crying."
Subbu uncle said, "he's right Mala, Neeti, Akshu and Naitu don't worry our Navi is a rebel, he's a fighter. He'll be fine soon and be joking around with us like before don't worry."
