Hanna Walker did not like surprises. Not when it came in the form of sniping remarks from a bunch of gits. There were people who looked away hurriedly. Acquaintances who ventured to ask how it came to be. A couple that whispered intensely behind her back and apologised awkwardly when their children pointed in her direction and called out loudly, "Look at that scar". Hanna was used to this type of reaction by then, which seemed to remind her that she was a bit different from the rest.
She had a lightning shaped scar that ran from her left eye, across the bridge of her nose, all the way to the edge of her right cheek. She was born with it. When she was young, she used to stare at the mirror imagining how she would have looked without the scar; but as she grew older, she started to grow fond of the scar as well. It felt different than the rest of the skin when a tear slid down her face. Or when Luke kissed her face.
Today Hanna was eating a burger at her usual restaurant when a man spotted her and called out loud, "look at Harry Potter over there with ketchup on her mouth!" A teenager sneered, "She reminds me of the troll I saw on Halloween." Laughter ensued. A girl looked at her and screamed loudly.
Hanna was not used to public humiliation. She put the knife down and stood up, ready to get out of the restaurant, reminding herself to find a better place next time.
This is the moment her scars began searing with a burning, blistering pain so intense that she wanted to tear her face off. Hanna saw through her fingers that object in front of her eyes became blurred. Her heart beat wildly in her chest, struggling vainly to jump out.
As if in a nightmare, she stumbled out of the restaurant, almost tripping on a drunken homeless man on the street. "I'm coming after you, Hanna." A clear, menacing male voice called her from the sky and lightning blasted down from the sky, striking straight through Hanna's heart and lifting her up above the ground. Suspended in mid air, Hanna slowly opened her eyes to see people scramble for shelter. She thought to herself, this is the end of everything. "Mother, I am coming to see you." She muttered a prayer, and fainted.
