Hanna hears Justin's new song current and feels her head reeling. It's not just the palpable pain but the rawness of the lyrics that cuts her deep. She's not seeing anybody now. But she's happy with her life. Every day is a blessing, every breath a gift. When Selena is away, she starts to find herself. How she likes to smile and laugh at the smallest things. She wishes Selena well, but she no longer feels the ache to see Selena's socials. They are no longer friends or lovers.
But what is it like for Selena? She tries to maintain a healthy lifestyle, going to the gym every day. She's kisses Benny goodnight and goodbye when he gets out of the house. They cook together, almost daily, because that's how they connect, through food. And on valentines day Selena would look forward to date night and flowers. She's enjoying this quiet life with Benny, knowing he loves her unconditionally, he's the love of her life.
One day, Benny buys her a fish tank full of tropical fish. Selena was so happy she gives all of the fishes each their own name. She uses her fingers to trace the path they are swimming, and imagine she's one of them, able to breathe under water. It must be fun to have nothing on their minds and no tasks to accomplish each day, no to do list. A thought flashes through her mind, and she asks Benny, "Are you still gonna love me if I'm a fish?" Benny chuckled deeply and asked, "you mean, like a mermaid?" "No, like a real fucking goldfish and you are like, human. Will you still love me a little?" Benny holds her with both his arms and said, "Then I will run to aqua man and ask him to turn me to a fish too, so we can do what fishes do." Saying so, he inches closer for a kiss, and Selena pushes his face away, "You haven't showered yesterday." Benny inches even closer and mutter, "Just the way you like it." And they end up tangled on the sofa.
Suddenly, Benny breaks out into laughter. Selena gives him a confused stare. Benny said, "it's your twisted humour, it gets me any time." Selena felt a jolt of excitement out of nowhere, in the heat of the moment she asked, "Benny Blanco, will you be my husband?"
Benny stares at her with his green eyes, a look of surprise, confusion and wildness, he can't believe Selena said this to him.
"Are you kidding?"
"Yes, no, I mean, since I broke off our engagement, I've been regretting it a bit..."
Benny lifted her up with his strong arms and kisses her hard.
"I have been waiting for you my whole life."
The news of their wedding comes unexpected to their past friends. Hanna is a medical student in university and Justin is a married man. They weren't invited but they got the news through mutual friends. Justin was not surprised. He banged her phone on the table and almost broke it. Hailey rushes in the room because of the noise he made, and sees him crying. She asks him what's wrong, he says nothing. Hanna received the news from a friend who casually mentions the invitation and ask is she coming too? She took a deep breath and said, "no, I wasn't invited." That night, she goes on the thread mill and runs 23 miles, until she's completely out of breath. She keeps telling herself, it's for the best, it's for the best. Because there's never a future for her and Selena.
The wedding happens on a Saturday. The nicer day of the weekend. Selena cries a little when she walks towards Benny, unsteady, guided by her father. This is the man she is going to build a family with, she will have his children, who looks just like little Bennies. She can't express the joy she feels. She's ready for it.
When they kiss, the entire world is spinning. White and red rose petals rains down from the sky and the crowd cheer as loudly as they can.
Soon it was over, and they bought a new house together, starting a new chapter of their lives.
