Trisha found the children of the Ice Men far on the other side of the great cavern. The lava river flowed down the center of the cavern, and they were as far away as they could get. They were afraid of her, fearing she was the Fire Slinger. No amount of persuasion would allow her to get anywhere near any of the children. They quickly disappeared into the lava tubes and hidden caves every time she spotted any of them. She was clueless about what to do. Otzil's only hope was for her to rescue the children and it was only a matter of time before he was captured, if he hadn't been already, and put to death in the Lava River. This would have been much easier if Otzil had crossed with her. The children would trust their Prince.
She made her way back to the Lava River, trying to figure something else out. The Fire Slinger had created the Lava River with her powers, and she had similar powers herself. Perhaps she could stop the Lava River? But she did not know how. Trisha put up her shield as she neared the river bank. She closed her eyes and concentrated within. She immediately felt her power of fire and, of course, her shield already in use. She searched for something else, but found nothing. She was growing tired of holding her shield up against the heat and retreated from the river. A hundred yards away, she dropped the shield and was hit by a heat wave. It had to be over 100 degrees and she started to sweat. She quickly retreated further into one of the lava tubes and the heat decreased the deeper she went until it ended at a small cavern.
A gasp from across the cavern startled her. Two young ice children were huddled together on the far side. Trisha was blocking the only exit, and they looked terrified. "It's okay, I won't hurt you." She said in a soft voice. The smaller one kept its face pressed into the slightly larger ice child crying. Trisha couldn't tell the difference between the sexes, but she guessed they could be brother and sister.
The larger of the two tried to stand and push the smaller one back behind him to protect her. But he was two weak and collapsed back to the cavern floor with his sister. They wear sick from the heat. The room felt a chilly 60 degrees to Trisha but to the Ice People probably felt more like 120 or more.
Trisha walked over to them. They cried out and plead for her not to hurt them. Once Trisha was a couple of feet away, she waved her hands out to activate her shield around all three of them. The small one screamed. But soon they felt a little better when the heat disappeared.
Trisha had to put a lot of energy into deflecting the heat to lower the temperature inside her shield. She knew she couldn't keep it up too long and would have to put even more energy into it getting across the lava river. Trisha didn't know if she could do it.
She tried to pick the little one up, knowing she would have to carry them both. She grunted and turned red in the face, unable to move the child. The little one was the size of a three-year-old human child but must have weighed 100 pounds or more. The child felt like she looked, a large icy cold rock.
Trisha looked around the room, worry in her eyes. She had run out of ideas. She couldn't go for help. Mike and the others did not know where she was. The Ice People thought she was the Fire Slinger, and she couldn't stop the lava river. If she left the children, they probably would soon die and she was getting weaker by the second, trying to hold up the shield.
