Nate was short, only five foot four, still waiting for that allusive growth spurt to happen. He was worrying it never would as he was about to turn 16 after school started in a couple weeks. He hated living in Nevada in August. Why would any school start when there was still an entire month of summer left!

Being short, skinny, and a little odd, he was picked on a lot. He had short wavy dirty blond hair, wore cargo pants and liked to wear t-shirts that sported pictures of dungeon and dragons mythological creatures. He had friends who were also not popular and got picked on as well for being different in their own ways. There favorite day of the week was the same as everyone else. Friday night! But instead of going on dates, drinking and partying in the woods, or just being mischievous teenagers, Nate and his friends played mythical games in his basement.

"So what is it tonight?" Jacob asked Tom. "Your turn to pick this week." Nathan was motioning over and over with his eyes toward Dungeon and Dragons.

Tom held up a Ouija board. Nate nodded in approval while Jacob threw his head back and moaned, "Come on! That thing never works!"

Tom held up some black candles and white chalk. "I have an idea." He smirked and began drawing a star on the concrete basement floor. "Put the candles at each point." He said handing them to Jacob. Nate found a lighter and lit each candle and turned out the lights. Tom placed the Ouija board in the center of the star and pretended to say some spell that sounded more like gibberish.

The three boys sat around the Ouija board. "Okay," Tom said. "I've been doing some reading on how to use a Ouija board. You know, to see what we did wrong last time."

Jacob laughed. "What we did wrong last time is you can't spell! I know you were moving it!" He accused.

"I was not!" Tom yelled back. "And I can so spell!" Turning back to his notes he read, "You have to do it with just two people at a time, not three. Also..."

"What!" Jacob exclaimed. "That's bull. I've seen five girls all do it at the same time and got better results than we ever have! I mean there was a breeze, candles flickering and the whole 12 yards."

Tom looked at Nate and rolled his eyes. "Will you just let me read this." He held his notes back up and read. "You need to move it purposely to get it all warmed up."

"Oh brother!" Jacob moaned, leaning back on his arms. "Can we just get on with it already?"

"Yeah, come on Tom. Lets do it already." Nate said.

"Okay, okay!" Tom tossed his notes down. "Nate, lets you and me go first." Flicking Jacob the bird. The two boys sat cross legged across from one another and lightly placed their hands upon the planchette. "Okay, now lets move it around in a figure eight a few times, and only I can ask the questions."

"What!" Both Jacob and Nate yelled.

"I mean I have to be the medium asking the questions, it says so in the instructions." Tom put out his hands as if warding them off. " You guys can tell me what questions to ask, but I have to be the one asking the spirits."
