“She’s also a princess of Obelia whether you don’t think of her as one or not” –Jennette.
((______________))
After speaking with the Princess Anthanasia and it was evening, Jennette retired to the emerald palace. Excitement visible in her eyes as she looked forward to Anthanasia ruling the empire in place of the emperor.
She knew Anthanasia would do a good job. Far better than anything she could do.
She opened the door to her room and plopped on the bed with a sad smile.
‘I really hope daddy wakes up and sees the good job sister has been doing’
Jennette rolled around the bed making her hair look disheveled. Then let out a little sigh.
‘If only I could be of more help to sister. She’s doing her best to take care of governmental affairs’
As Jennette brainstormed on ways she could help Anthanasia an idea popped into her head. She had read about this in one of her many many collected books.
‘In books nobles try sabotaging the emperor they do not support or think is weak from inside the palace. For example, they could turn a maid to their side and find out the emperor’s weak points. Sister, will probably be too busy managing governmental affairs so she may not have time to oversee how the palace is doing like daddy who had support from many sides.
In the novels, sometimes, if the emperors supporters dislike the woman he is courting they will find all means to take the woman down, so…daddy’s vassals who are greedy for more power and do not like sister may want to move her out of power and now that the palace won’t have proper management, they will see this as an opportunity.
Ah, now I see how I can help sister! I will manage the place’
All her novel reading seemed to pay off in this moment. Anyways, Jennette thought of proposing to oversee the internal affairs of the palace as it was the base of having everything run smoothly. Then suddenly she heard a knock on the door.
She sat up and arranged her disheveled appearance then permitted the person to enter.
“Come in”
In came a woman with brown hair and green eyes. It was Jennette’s aunt, Rosalina Margareta. She closed the door behind her and changed her angry expression to a loving gaze towards Jennette as if her anger had never been there.
Jennette felt hesitant to accept her aunts loving attitude, as it had been her aunt all this time, who had been giving her ideas that Anthanasia saw her as an enemy for the throne. But during the months she had been getting closer to Anthanasia she started to believe and trust Anthanasia more than her aunt.
However there was a slight guilt inside her heart as her aunt had always been good to her. But those feelings changed after she greeted Rosalina and she responded.
“Greetings aunty”
“My little Jennette. Oh how dreadful it must have been to watch that terrible, truly vile Anthanasia sit on your daddy’s throne while he’s unconscious. You must be angry. That thing trying to take over his position when he never loved her”
Rosalina had been calculating all this while. If Jennette expressed her opposition to Anthanasia sitting on the throne the nobles would back her up and make her sit on the throne for herself, as after all they saw Jennette as weak prey and a puppet ruler.
‘But they’ll be disappointed! Because only I can control the naïve Jennette. As I’m the one who has raised her with love and took her to the Alpheus manor where she lived like a princess that she truly is. I have her rapped around my finger’ Rosalina thought to herself.
Jennette didn’t respond for a few seconds. Rosalina’s smile dropped slightly as she noticed Jennette’s expression.
“Jennette?”
“How dare you”
“Wh-
“How dare you talk about the current ruler of Obelia like that? No how DARE YOU talk about a PRINCESS like that?” Jennette stood up from her bed staring down at Rosalina with cold eyes no one ever thought Jennette could have.
“H-
“Is it because you don’t know your place, dear aunty? First of all, how dare you call the emperor proxy ‘vile’. The only thing that’s vile here is YOU, dear aunty. Secondly you refer to her as ‘that thing’. ‘That thing’ up there in your head seems to not be functioning or do you not want to put it in use” Jennette said angrily pointing at Rosalina’s head. “Thirdly, it is not YOUR place to say who the emperor loved”
Rosalina was shocked by Jennette’s words. Was this the innocent and naïve Jennette she had seen as a puppet?
Quickly recovering from her surprise she buried her face into her palms and pretended to weep “Is this my Jennette who I have raised with all the love in my heart. What made you change? Oh how Princess Anthanasia is trying to use you. Turning you against me!”
Jennette looked at Rosalina’s ‘weeping’ figure and moved her to sit on the bed. She held Rosalina’s hands and made Rosalina look into her eyes.
Rosalina expected to see Jennette’s tearful eyes as she would be apologizing but felt scared as she looked at her eyes that were icier than before.
“Dear aunty, I hope you do not think I have lost my respect for elders. But I’ll tell you this, only those who respect themselves will be respected. And respecting yourself is by knowing your place and you…obviously do not know your place” She smiled icily then patted the shaking Rosalina on her back. “What made me change? Change is something that is common yet uncommon. Just like the seasons, change follows the pattern of your heart. My heart now knows that sister isn’t the one who wants to use me. It is only you Countess Margareta that wants to use me. The ‘love’ you say that you raised me with is nothing more than your greed for power.”
“Jennette-
“I don’t remember ever giving you permission to call me by my name. Tsk, a Countess who’s praised to be in the highest ranks of nobility doesn’t even know how proper etiquette.”
Rosalina stood up in anger, her weak façade gone as she glared threateningly at Jennette “You are making the wrong choice”
“Am I really the one who’s making the wrong choice here?”
“Ha. You will be the one smiling throughout the week, but I’ll be the one laughing for all the weeks after that till eternity. You tell me to know my place, but you don’t even know the place you stand” Rosalina said haughtily.
Jennette smiled easily her blue eyes emitting a dangerous aura “If that’s how you want to keep fooling yourself I have no problem with it, but in the meantime, will you kindly get out, dear aunty”
The lines had been drawn and now Jennette and Rosalina stood on opposing sides. She felt insulted and immediately opened the door and sashayed out leaving Jennette who laid on the bed letting out a big sigh.
‘Wow. What a naughty girl you’re becoming. But if it’s for sister, I will be the naughtiest in the empire’
