A few days later, Hyeri was surprised to see an addition to their lunch group.
It wasn't Charlotte. Instead, it was a boy named Jungkook. He had dark black hair, dark brown eyes, and an adorable smile. He received similar treatment as Jimin from the girls, but he was even more clueless.
"Hi! Nice to meet you, I'm Hyeri," she said, introducing herself.
"Hi, I'm Jungkook," he responded, giving her a smile.
"Are you new? I haven't really seen you anywhere around campus."
"He's a Friend," Jimin said, swallowing a dumpling.
"Oh, who are you here to help?" Hyeri asked while taking out her lunch.
"A girl named Charlotte. I don't really know where she is, though," Jungkook replied, smiling embarrassedly.
"Hold on, let me get her for you," she replied, standing up.
Hyeri made her way across the cafeteria, spotting Charlotte. She seemed less tense, just subtly. Her shoulders were a little more relaxed, and her face was a less tense.
Hyeri tapped her on the shoulder, and she turned to face her.
"Oh, hi Hyeri-ssi, do you need something?" Charlotte asked, looking up at her and smiling.
"No, um, there's someone here to see you? I can't really explain here, could you come with me?" she replied, giving her a small smile in return.
"Of course." Charlotte stood up and followed Hyeri to their table.
Charlotte spotted Jungkook and tugged Hyeri's sleeve.
"Who's he?" she asked.
"The person who's here to see you. Don't worry, he's nice," Hyeri replied as they reached their table.
Jungkook saw Charlotte and gave her a wave.
"Hi, I'm Jungkook. You're Charlotte, right?" he asked, brushing his hair out of his eyes.
Charlotte widened her eyes.
"Hi, nice to meet you. Um..." she trailed off. "I've never seen you before, how do you know my name?" she asked, giving him a hesitant smile.
"It's a long story," he replied, chuckling. "Take a walk with me?"
Charlotte seemed uncomfortable, and Hyeri could see that Jungkook sensed that.
"Hyeri-ssi, why don't you come along? If you could both get you lunches, and maybe we can walk while eating?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.
"Yeah, let me get my lunch." Hyeri grabbed her sandwich. "Jimin-ssi, see you in Math?"
"Yeah, see you!" Jimin replied.
Charlotte made a motion of heading back to get her lunch, but Jungkook flexed his fingers and it was in his hands.
"Here you go," he said, handing it to her and beckoning them to follow as he started walking.
Charlotte widened her eyes and blinked. She turned towards Hyeri with a look of puzzlement, and Hyeri nudged her forward.
"Charlotte-ssi, can you please walk in the front next to me?" Jungkook asked, looking back.
Charlotte nodded and hastily caught up with him. Hyeri walked a few paces behind.
"So, Charlotte-ssi, your name isn't Korean, are you from a different country?"
"Well, my mom is English, and she moved to Korea a few years before having me, so that's why..."
Hyeri zoned out of their conversation as she looked around her campus. The sun could be seen through the clouds, and the cold air was refreshing on Hyeri's cheeks. Hyeri turned her attention back towards the pair in front of her. Charlotte was looking at Jungkook with a shocked expression as he made a blade of grass float, twirl, and form into a heart before it softly landed on the ground. Charlotte turned back to Hyeri and widened her dark brown eyes.
"Holy heck, do you go to Hogwarts or something?" she asked, still in shock.
"No-"
"So you're like an angel? Ohmigosh Jungkook-ssi, do you know God? Please tell him that I did not mean to look at that website I swear I was just trying to download a song-"
"I don't know God, Charlotte-ssi-"
"Hyeri-ssi? Are you an angel too? Is that how you box so well?"
"Hold on, Hyeri-ssi, you box? Can you teach me?" Jungkook asked in amazement.
"Yeah, she fights really well, but we were never taught that angels could box- "
Hyeri held out her hands and made a motion to stop both Charlotte and Jungkook from talking. Amid the chaos, Jimin had jogged over and was watching the trio with amusement.
"Charlotte-ssi, I'm not an angel-" she started, but was interrupted by Jimin.
"If anything, she's a dang turtle, you should see her run," he said, grinning.
Hyeri gave him a look and he shrugged and said "What? It's true."
Hyeri sighed and turned her focus back to Charlotte and Jungkook.
"I'm not an angel," she repeated. "Neither is Jungkook-ssi. But he can tell you what he is and what he's here to do."
Jungkook nodded. "I'm a Friend, capital "f." And my job is exactly what it sounds like; I'm here to be your friend. Maybe a little like a guardian angel if anything, but I'm not a recycled human who flexes that they get halos," he replied. Then his expression turned serious. "My purpose is to help you overcome your sadness. Although I don't exactly know what happened, I'm here to help."
"Oh," she said, her face dimming. "That's very kind of you, but I'm quite alright."
"Charlotte-ssi, I'll still be your friend. Even if you don't feel like talking about anything. I'm here as long as you want me to be," he replied, giving her a gentle smile.
She tilted her face up to him, her red hair gently swaying back, and nodded with a smile.
"Thank you," she said.
She turned towards Hyeri. "So you're not a Friend?" she asked
"No, I'm not. But Jimin-ssi is a Friend, and he's here for me, and Namjoon-ssi is also a Friend, and he's with Minhyuk-ssi," Hyeri replied.
Charlotte nodded.
"Well, guys we should really head to class. If I'm late again, Seonsang-nim Lee is going to have my head. I'm her TA," Jimin said, zipping up his jacket.
"Yeah, you're right, we should start heading off," Hyeri replied. The pair started walking to class and waved at Charlotte and Jungkook.
As they began walking, Hyeri couldn't help but notice how pretty Charlotte's smile was, which made her rethink her own crooked smile. She laughed quietly and entered her classroom.
