Hyeri sighed, snuggling deeper into her blankets. She smelled the delicious aroma of bacon being cooked, and then... burnt?
She was woken from her slumber by the words "Crap, crap, crap!" resounding through the house. Covering her head with a pillow, she tried to fall back asleep. Then she heard the smoke alarm beeping.
Hyeri threw off her pillow and bolted to the kitchen, where chaos was ensuing. There seemed to be a kind of hologram-projection screen floating in midair, but there was no hologram it was coming from. A boy around Jimin's age was peering out from it, concern evident in his features.
"What's the screen?" Hyeri asked mildly.
Jimin peeked out his head from near the stove "That's your first question?"
Hyeri furrowed her eyebrows until she spotted what was happening near Jimin. A pan of bacon was floating in midair and there was a large fire on the stovetop.
The boy in the screen sat back. "You make me feel ashamed to be called your hyung! I thought I taught you enough about cooking but clearly not," he said, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Hyung I'm trying to put out a fire, please stop-!" Jimin said, turning around in indignance. The pan of bacon clattered onto the stovetop and some pieces of bacon fell out, catching aflame.
Both Jimin and the boy widened their eyes.
"Use your magic!" the boy on the screen exclaimed.
Jimin snapped into action. He stood by the stove and held his hands afloat, ready to stop the fire.
"Yah! You're going to get burned, at least kneel!" the boy from the screen shouted.
Jimin sighed impatiently and kneeled. Amidst the chaos, Hyeri had dragged out a bucket of water and just as she was about to pour it over the fire, it ceased. The water instead landed on a head of blue hair.
Hyeri looked at the half burnt pan and at a piece of bacon that was blacked on it. She then shifted her gaze to Jimin, whose hair was dripping. His eyes were closed, and droplets of water freed themselves from his eyelashes. Jimin sighed resignedly. The boy on the screen started laughing hysterically. He wiped away a tear as Jimin spoke.
"Hyung, I'll call you back."
After they dealt with the kitchen fiasco, Hyeri and Jimin collapsed onto the couch tiredly. A worried neighbour had shown up while Hyeri was drying the ground and a soaked Jimin had to greet her.
Jimin sighed, rubbing a towel on his hair.
"So- what happened? How-why was there a man on a screen in the living room?" Hyeri asked tentatively.
"That was Jin hyung. I had to call him, I've been restless recently," Jimin responded, running his hands through his still damp hair. "There's just no way that Charlotte's name shouldn't have been logged on."
"Oh. You're still worried about that," Hyeri said, nodding her head. Jimin looked as if he was about to apologize. "No, don't worry, you don't have to apologize, I understand. One question though: why was the screen floating in midair?"
Jimin laughed. "It's this," he replied, moving closer to Hyeri and showing her a ring on his hand. It was a silver color topped with a single diamond studded into it. Hyeri gaped.
"Is that real?" she asked, touching the jewel, which felt cool against her skin.
"Yes, and that's why I usually conceal it." he replied, waving his hands over the ring. It disappeared as if it was never there. "It strengthens my magic and also enables me to contact any Friend. And, without it, I can be killed. Not by the Gloom, but by any means that can be used to kill humans."
