Hyeri looked at Jimin, who was sitting on a chair at the foot of her bed.
"Mmm. This hot cocoa is liquid heaven," he said, sighing.
Hyeri took a sip of her own cocoa and smiled inside as it warmed her. When she had searched up a "Friend," she had gotten a few results, none of them matching what Jimin had told her. So she guessed she had to ask Jimin about everything she wanted to know.
"Okay, Jimin. You know you dropped a huge bomb with everything you told me earlier. So I had a few... well, more than a few questions," she began.
"Naturally, you do. Ask away!" Jimin replied, giving her a smile.
"Okay. My first question is, you know how you said that Friends are there to help humans work through their issues, and be there for them? Aren't there humans designated to do that job? Like, therapists and school counselors? Why does there have to be a whole different species dedicated to that?" Hyeri asked.
Jimin answered immediately. "You humans are usually pretty good about doing things like that, being there for people who need you. But there are always stubborn people, like you, who refuse to ask anyone for help, or there are some of you who really don't have anyone, which is another description you fit. In those cases, we Friends have to intervene and help you. Usually the time we observe you is a couple of years, maybe two to three, before we decide to step in," he explained, finishing his hot cocoa.
Hyeri nodded. That made sense.
"Why did you pick me? To be the one you help?" Hyeri asked with curiosity.
Jimin took a moment to think before answering.
"I guess you seemed like someone who really needed a ray of sunshine. You lost so much, at such a young age, and that really made me feel like I should do something to help. I researched your story, and it really broke my heart. That's what I remember. I do not remember anything I researched about you, though," he replied thoughtfully.
Hyeri was puzzled. "Why don't you remember anything? That can't have been that long ago, right?" she wondered.
This question he answered easily. "It's standard protocol for all Friends. We remember why we chose you, but not all the information about you. Because, if you think about it, I wouldn't be able to bond with you if I knew everything about you. W want our humans to have a chance to be able to explain their lives whenever they want and however they want. It feels like an invasion on privacy if we just know without your permission. And that is why we also forget about any other files we might have looked through when picking our human." he finished, shifting in his seat.
Hyeri took this information in. She felt touched that Friends took care of such little details to make sure that their human was comfortable with them.
"What happens if you fail? If your human refuses to let you in, or if they deny that they need help at all?" she asked. This was a question that had just occurred to her.
Jimin had to think again.
"That one took me a while to find an answer for, since the scenario you just mentioned hasn't happened so many times, surprisingly. If after giving their best, the Friend doesn't get through to their human, then they leave. From there, we wait a bit, maybe a year, to give them some time. Then, either the same Friend, or a different one, goes and tries again. We never stop trying," he said finally.
Hyeri had to admire this dedication on their part.
As Jimin looked around her room, clearly pleased with himself, she thought about anything else she would want answered. And then, spotting her history book on her desk, a series of questions surfaced in her mind.
"How long have you guys been around? No one ever discovered your species, but how? Do you make yourselves invisible?" Hyeri asked, finishing her hot cocoa.
"Woah there. One question at a time," he said, laughing. "We've existed since the very first human who needed help. There's actually a whole story behind that, for another day. We've never been discovered, because, as you see, we look like humans. Also, because, we were humans before we became Friends," he said nonchalantly.
Hyeri widened her eyes at this piece of information. "And you didn't tell me this before why?" she asked.
"I didn't think it was too important," he replied, shrugging.
"It is! Does that mean I can become a Friend, too? Also, now I have questions about you when you were a human," she asked, brimming with curiosity.
Jimin's face darkened. "I'd rather not talk about that. At least not right now. You know what, it's getting late, I think I'm gonna head to bed," he said, standing up.
Hyeri was really confused, but she did realize it was around 11 PM, and didn't push it.
"Alright. Do you think you can sleep on the couch? There are extra blankets in the closet- oh right. You've already organized everything. Well then, you know where they are," she said, giving him a little smile.
"Haha, yeah. I'll be fine sleeping on the couch, thanks. Good night," Jimin replied, running his hand through his hair and giving her a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"Good night, Jimin," she said, although she was already busy thinking about something else.
He gave her a little wave before walking out of her room and shutting the door.
Hyeri decided to stay up for couple of hours, since she'd just woken up two hours ago. She read some books and watched a little YouTube, but nothing took her mind off of how Jimin had reacted when she'd asked him about his time as a human. She guessed something traumatic must have happened, and he didn't want to talk about it. She understood that feeling. As she drifted off to sleep, she decided she wasn't going to push him to talk about it, but she definitely was going to help him work through it. He was always there for everyone, he definitely needed someone there for him, too.
A/n:
Hi everyone! A I had a lot of spare time this weekend, so I decided to just write Chapter 3 as well and publish it. Did you guys like it? Apparently, Jimin has some issues he needs to work through, too. Something else that might or might not have occured to you is that since Hyeri is a minor, shouldn't she have a legal guardian? That's something that will be clarified in the next chapter. I also noticed, my writing style completely changed from Chapter 1 to now. But its kinda hard to maintain that style with the way I'm trying to write this story now. Anyway, thank you for reading! Don't forget to like and comment! I'd love to hear your opinions and any feedback in the comments!
With love,
Prisha
