Louise: Why do you have a Japanese name, but not James?

Mei: Well, it's a bit complicated.

Louise: Just tell me.

Mei: So, my previous name was actually "May".

Mei: James and I have relatives who are in Japan, and they don't speak English. So, we speak in Japanese. Due to "May" and "James" not being Japanese names, we have to write them in katakana, a writing system based off of syllables. Because of this, "May" becomes "Mei" and "James" becomes "Jeimuzu". For some reason, I always liked the spelling of "Mei". It's also pronounced the same as "May", so pronunciation problems won't arise. Because of that, I asked my dad if I could change my name legally. Let's just say that the rest is history.

Louise: I see.

Alyssa: Better than May!

NV: Of course you'd think that. Mei is your real middle name.

Alyssa: And my Taiwanese grandmother's name, and the name of one of my best friends!

NV: Don't know if you've noticed yet, but one of those Mei's isn't with us anymore and the other isn't even from your AU.
