As I continued lounging lazily in my bed, I sighed deeply.

Today is the day.

I sighed again and rolled over to grab my vibrating phone. I frowned at the screen when I saw the horrendous selfie of him lighting up my screen. When did he take that?

“Tommy?” my voice gruff from the lack of use. I mean, it was nine in the morning.

“Good morning, best friend.”

I rolled my eyes but a large grin made its way onto my face.

“Hello. How can I help you at nine in the fucking morning?” I scolded him teasingly.

“Do you know what today is?”

“Yes?”

“I’m thankful for you.”

I felt my throat swell up with emotion as I blinked away the sudden tears that appeared. Today was Thanksgiving, and I was struggling with a whole lot of things this morning.

This would be my first Thanksgiving dinner alone. The first year I wouldn’t fight with Justin who got to hoard the mash potatoes and stuffing. The first year I wouldn’t come home to the smell of dinner cooking and the sound of crazed shouts from my dad watching the game on t.v.

This is the first Thanksgiving without mom.

And somehow this large human puppy just knew what to say to make me feel a little bit more okay. I didn’t know when I would ever completely feel okay but I knew having people like Tommy around was a pretty good start.

He must have known I was emotional at his sudden confession because he patiently continued to wait on the other line as I battled my inner emotions.

“Uh-happy Thanksgiving, Tommy,” I know my sputtered out response wasn’t nearly as thoughtful and eloquent as his, but he knew the deeper meaning that was held within my words.

Happy Thanksgiving, scary girl,” I could practically hear the smile in his voice.

I smiled back while rubbing my stupidly watery eyes.

“Whatcha doing today?”

“Netflix, ice cream, possible cuddling with my teddy bear,” I hear his booming laughter on the other line before I asked, “what about you?”

“I’m about to drive up to my ma’s.”

“This early?”

“Well it’s a three hour drive, and dinner starts at one and goes until six…”

I laughed.

“Well I hope you have an awesome time,” I sighed will sitting up and rolling out of bed.

“Well…I was wondering if you wanted to come with me?”

I stopped moving and I heard silence on the other line as well.

“I mean-like you don’t have to. I just thought…I guess I shouldn’t have assumed-“

“Could I?” I hadn’t realized how breathy my voice became with surprise.

“Yeah! We’d love for you to come, honestly.”

“Okay, th-thanks. I’ll be ready in about 15?”

“See you soon then.”

“Bye, Tommy,” I hung up and stood still for a moment and relished in the relieved feeling that was coming over me in waves.
