“GET UP GET UP GET UP!!” I jerked my body up wards and let out startled man cry that was similar to a caveman yelling in battle. I glanced around my small room and glared at the blonde haired girl that was smiling so big I was hoping her face split in two.

“Melissa, what the fu-“

“It’s time to go to class! You spent the last part of summer and the first two weeks of classes laying in this bed. It’s time, Ana. It’s time to go on adventure,” she kept grinning from ear to ear like she was in an informercial. I groaned and laid my head back down on my pillow.

“Time?” I rasped while rubbing the sleep from my eyes.

“It’s 8:43 and class starts in seventeen minutes,” she said nonchalantly.

What?” I whispered in horror.

“Shuttle comes in seven minutes. Get your ass up,” she then walked out of my room leaving me staring at the ceiling wondering why I ever relied on Mel to get me up at a reasonable time.

“Six minutes!” she called from our mini kitchen. I grumbled profanities under my breath before yelling back “You better have made me some goddamn coffee!”

I grabbed a hair tie and put my hair into the messiest side braid I think one could ever have before stumbling into a pair of skinny jeans and combat boots. Grabbing my black oversized sweater and beanie I hoped I looked like a cute-grunge-girl instead of barely-awake-hobo-girl. I ran to the bathroom and brushed my teeth in very un-lady like manner that resulted in toothpaste being drooled on my chest.

Fuck,” I hissed before grabbing my maroon scarf and wrapping it around my neck. And with that note I ran out our dorm room and grabbed the coffee Melissa was patiently holding out for me in a cute travel mug.

“I got you, babe,” she winked playfully at me before locking our door. “Off we go! How does it feel? The first day of school!”

“Mel, classes are like, two weeks in,” I protested.

“Shut your face. This is your first day of your sophomore year of college and I’m taking a damn picture when we get to the shuttle,” she glared at me.

“Oh god.”

After embarrassingly posing and smiling in front of the University’s shuttle I actually got on the mini bus and took out my schedule that I haven’t opened since before the funeral when I signed up for classes. I sighed and glanced at my first class today. It, thankfully, was only a little over an hour and a half. However, it was calculus BC and I think I that’s enough of an explanation in itself.

“Calc BC first thing in the morning? Ouch, dude. Why would you do that?” Mel peered over my shoulder glancing at my schedule.

“I don’t know, I guess it seemed like a good idea. My mum encour-“ my voice stopped short as I realized what I was saying. My throat seemed like it was closing in on itself and I felt the familiar burning behind my eyes. I tried to clear my throat, but the sound I made sounded strangled.

“She encouraged you to take it, I know.” Mel smiled at me, but it was one of those sad smiles. The kind where nostalgia was written all over it.

I sipped my coffee.

“It’s okay, you know?” she murmured quietly. “I don’t care what your dad says. It wasn’t your fau-“

“What class do you have this morning?” I cut her off. She sighed and looked out the window before forcing a smile at me.

“AP Biology with Luca,” she grinned at me. Luca was her boyfriend, he was nice, a bit weird, but strangely endearing. He had a thing for bugs, I mean he wanted to be an entomologist of all things.
