I was so excited! I think I've never been this excited in my entire life. My best friend Jisoo and I just graduated from College in our hometown Seoul and we decided that after all those years of studying and working part-time-jobs to keep afloat, we deserved a break.
We wanted to lay on the beach, soak up the sun, drink cocktails by the pool and maybe do a little bit of yoga. And where better to go to do all those things than the Island of the gods, Bali. Jisoo and I had lived very humbly for the past few months in order to save up all our money for this trip.
"I can't believe we're actually going!" I squealed full of excitement in my seat next to Jisoo. She looked back at me with a raised eyebrow and a smirk. "The plane hasn't even taken off yet and you're already bouncing up and down! Do I need to sedate you or are you gonna let me sleep in peace during the flight Jendeukie?"
"Awww, you're so boring! How can you sleep when we are embarking on the best four weeks of our lives!!!" I grabbed onto her arm and shook it a little. She shook her head at me.
"I'm just tired... didn't really sleep well last night..." my best friend elaborated. I scrunched my eyebrows together. "Are you still afraid of flying?" I asked her, worry in my voice.
"I'm not used to flying... it makes me a little nervous! So what?" she snapped a little. I instantly wrapped my arms around her and layed my head against hers. "It'll be fine Chu! I let you sleep and when you wake up we'll be in Bali! But once we're there, I won't tune my excitement down again! You're just gonna have to manage!" I nudged her gently and smiled.
"I've been managing you and your excitement for ten years now! I can handle it. Just not when we're about to be thrown ten kilometers up into the air in a stale tin can!" she waved her hand around, referring to the plane. I just laughed. I loved flying. I didn't understand how anyone could be afraid of it. I loved looking out the window the whole time, marvelling at the world underneath me.
Being so high up in the clouds really gave you a new perspective. Up in the clouds I felt more free. Jisoo and I were so wonderfully free right now. We had graduated. No more school for either of us. We didn't have any job commitments yet and we had four whole weeks of vacation ahead of us. If Jisoo wasn't so afraid of flying, I would have suggested we order some wine to toast to our newfound freedom. But I knew that Jisoo had taken a sleeping pill and those don't mix well with alcohol...
The plane ascended into the sky and I felt my heart literally skip a beat out of pure happiness. Bye bye Seoul! See you later, maybe never! I internally laughed at the thought.

The landing in Denpasar was smooth but nevertheless Jisoo was clinging to my arm painfully. She had woken up just before the plane was going on its' descend. After we disembarked from the plane, we got our luggage. I had expected us to have to wait a lot longer but the airport staff was actually quite fast. As I was the one who had planned our trip, I knew exactly what to do. Jisoo just trailed after me. She was still a bit out of it from the landing. I exchanged our korean money to Indonesian money and I got us balinese sim cards with enough data for the month. I had done my research indeed.
I had even arranged for a driver from our accommodation to pick us up at the airport and once we went outside he was waiting for us with a handwritten sign. I smiled and waved at him and soon we were on our way to Canggu.
Once we got settled in our rooms, Jisoo and I met at the community pool. We had booked a little Bungalow Villa with two separate bedrooms in this cute seaside Resort. The first thing I noticed about Bali was that it was pleasantly warm. Other people might say it was hot, but to me it felt just perfect. I actually liked the humidity of south-east-asia. I've been to Thailand a couple of times with my parents before and it was there that I realized how much I liked the hot and humid weather. In Seoul I was constantly cold. Except during the summer of course. But let's face it, summer is way too short in Korea and then fall comes around and it gets cold all over again.
