Chapter 20: The Gift

It was the last day of Tooniversity and Maddy packed her bags to go back to New Mushroomton. "That's the last of them!" Bella said as she packed all her things as everyone else followed. "I'm really gonna miss you guys!" Bella said as she did a sudden group hug. As she released her roomies, Maddy had something to say. "You know my parents are planning a last day of school party and you guys are invited!" Maddy said handing out the invitations. "Eeeek! I'm so excited!" Bella squealed. "You said it!" Cecilia said. "Oh I can't wait!" Trixie smiled. They heard horns honking outside. "Looks like the parents have arrived," Bella said. All the girls went out the door and the school doors to see their parents as all the toons went home for the summer. "Bye gals! See you tonight!" Bella said as she drove off in the car. Trixie and Cecilia left too and hugged Maddy goodbye. As Maddy was putting things in the van, she felt a tap on her shoulder. "Hey," Zoey said. "Hi," Maddy said to Zoey. "My parents told me I should apologize to you after how I treated you," Zoey said. "So are we good?" Zoey asked. Maddy smiled and shook her hand. "Sure thing!" Maddy said and gave her an invitation. "What's this?" Zoey asked. "It's an invitation to my summer party. You can come if you want," Maddy said. Suddenly, Zoey smiled and wagged her tail. "Sure! No problem!" she said and headed back to her parents. The bullies also got an invite and so did Roo along with Applebloom. Then Maddy saw Zeke. She walked up to him slowly and tapped him on the shoulder. "Hey Zeke," she said. "Hey Mads! I wanted to say I had fun hanging out with you at Tooniversity," Zeke said, slightly blushing. "Me too," Maddy said, blushing. There was a pause. "By the way, I wanted to to give you this," she said as she handed Zeke the invite. He opened it and read it. "Cool! That's awesome you're having a party!" Zeke said. "That's the thing. I was wondering if you would like to come," Maddy blushed. Zeke smiled and put his hand on Maddy's shoulder. "I wouldn't miss it for the world," he said. Maddy was so excited that she kissed Zeke on the cheek. Elsa honked the horn to Guinevere 2. "Come on slowpoke!" Leo called out. "See ya later?" Maddy asked Zeke. "Yeah! Later! Right!" Zeke said nervously as Maddy giggled and headed home to get ready for the party.

Maddy was all ready for the party as all her friends arrived. The parents were invited too as everyone chatted. "I can't believe you live in a mushroom! That's so cool!" Cecilia said. "Yeah it feels like home to me," Bella said. "I couldn't agree more," Trixie smiled. Just then, the doorbell rang. "I'll get it," Maddy said. As she opened the door, she saw Zeke and his parents. "Hi guys! Come in!" Maddy smiled. As Zeke's parents left to go chat with the others, Zeke stood by the door with a yellow dandelion flower in his hand. "This is for you," Zeke said as he handed Maddy the flower. "Thank you Zeke," she smiled and brought him into her house. They chatted and danced for a while. After that, Maddy chatted with her new friends. "Hey, has anyone seen Zeke?" Maddy asked. "Last time I saw him he was sitting on your porch," Becca said. "You better go check on him. He seemed sad," Boris said. "I agree," Boris oinked. Maddy went and peeked out the window. Zeke was sitting out on the porch looking sad. Maddy went and opened the door, closed it, and sat next to Zeke. "I love this night. Just look at the stars! It always makes me think my dad is up there looking down on me," Maddy said. She looked over at Zeke who still looked sad. "What? What's wrong?" Maddy asked him. "I just feel stupid for how the way I treated you when school started. I don't know what came over me," Zeke said. Maddy put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey it's ok, we all make mistakes one way or another. But I'm glad you are back to your normal self," Maddy said as Zeke wiped his nose. "Thanks Maddy. You have been there for me like no one else would. Some of my friends thought I was a jerk and never really fit in. I felt like I was a screwup," Zeke told her. At that point,  Maddy made a connection about what Zeke just said to what her dad used to say. "Hey, don't worry about it," Maddy said. "Look I may not have a dad, but I'll always have you," Maddy told Zeke as she put her hand on his. Then they started to sing:

They looked deep into each others eyes and were about to kiss when the door opened. "Hey guys there's a surprise! Come quick! Maddy and Zeke's parents are gonna announce it!" Bella said. "You don't wanna miss it!" Roo said behind Bella as they both winked at each other. They cracked the door as both left. Zeke bowed down to Maddy. "May I help you, my lady?" Zeke said offering his hand. Maddy took his offer and giggled. They walked hand in hand back to Maddy's house. They opened the door and everyone cheered and clapped. "I don't get it. What's the big occasion?" Maddy asked. "Zeke has a little surprise for you," Sierra said. "You'll really like it," Elsa said after Sierra. Suddenly, Zeke tapped Maddy on the shoulder and had a gift for her. "I don't understand. It's not my birthday silly," Maddy said. "Open the gift first and read the card last," Zeke told her. Maddy opened the gift really quick and was surprised what it was. It was her dad's old Guinevere license plate with light blue rhinestones all around it. "Where-where did you get this?" Maddy asked. "Zeke found it at the dumpster. It was his idea," Becca said. "And he decorated it for you," Herbert oinked. "It's the thought that counts," Zeke shrugged, winking at Maddy. "I love it," Maddy said and gave Zeke a bear hug as Zeke returned the gesture. "Oh and we also have one more surprise," Bella said as Roo, AppleBloom, and Maddy's roommates brought out a sign that read:

Violets are blue
Will you be my girlfriend
Cuz I love you

Maddy gasped and teared up happily. She looked at Zeke. "So what do you say? Will you be my girlfriend?" Zeke asked her. Maddy squealed and jumped into Zeke's arms. "Yes I would love to," Maddy said. Zeke and Maddy looked into each other's eyes. As Zeke pushed a strand of hair back on Maddy's face, they leaned in for the kiss and everyone cheered. Some of the parents hugged their kids and were crying happily. Boris and Becca realized they were holding hands and blushed. It was a great night.
