Chapter 23

“Nialler,” Louis said, entering the room where he was. Madeline-Grace knelt by his bed and put her head near his feet.

“We will give you a minute alone,” the doctor said. They all exited and left Madeline-Grace and Louis alone.

Louis thanked them then ran over to Niall’s bed and cupped his face in his hands. “You are strong, I know you can get through this. Come on baby, I need you to pull through for Liam and Madeline-Grace and Haz and me and Jace. Even Z and Perrie. We all need you. Come on baby. You are our little leprechaun. Come on Niall.” Louis was crying now and he needed to wipe his eyes. He didn’t want to move his hands. He wanted to savor ever last second he had with Niall. Niall reached up and wiped them for him softly.

“I’m sorry. I can’t control this. I don’t know why this is happening, but it is,” Niall said weakly. Tears leaked out of his own eyes.

Madeline-Grace was on the other side and she held one of Niall’s hands.

“What I said yesterday, I meant it. I don’t think I can live without you. Life you suck without you. I love you,” Madeline-Grace said.

Niall said he loved her and kissed her hand. Madeline-Grace leaned over and kissed his cheek.

“Can you sing?” Niall asked Louis.

“Sure thing.” Louis started to sing. At the chorus, Louis sounded amazing.

“Where did I go wrong?

I lost a friend

Somewhere along in the bitterness

And I would’ve stayed up with you all night.

Had I known how to save a life.”

It was Niall’s favorite song from when they were in the band together. After that one, he sang another. He sang Life Of The Party by Shawn Mendes.

Niall smiled, and closed his eyes. His body jerked and he was still. Louis stopped singing and looked at Niall. Squeezing his hand as hard as he could, Louis looked for any facial expressions from his snowflake.

The pulse machine held a steady noise and Louis collapsed onto the ground, crying.

After a quick moment, Madeline-Grace helped Louis up and they walked back to Liam’s room together.

Liam was awake and saw their faces. “Where is Nialler?”

“He is um… not with us anymore.” Liam crumbled.

“I’m really sorry. Just know he loves you with all his heart,” Louis said.

“I love you Daddy.” Madeline-Grace said. She climbed into the bed with him and he wrapped his arms around her.

“Why did this happen?” Madeline-Grace asked quietly.

“I dunno,” Liam mumbled into her hair. They laid in silence and hugged each other. Eventually, they fell asleep. Louis watched them for a while before turning to his phone. He couldn’t even go on his phone without crying because his lock screen picture was of the band. They were all young. Zayn, Harry, Louis, Niall, and Liam. Niall and Liam were holding hands behind their backs. Liam would be so shut down now that Niall was gone. How did this happen?

After looking at the picture a few moments longer, tears splashed onto his screen. Louis locked his phone and put his head in his hands. Niall; sweet, loving Niall, was dead.
