Once she was back in the room, Kara showed them the pictures.

“There is nothing wrong that can’t be fixed by rehab. That’s good. We will just need to reset the cracked ribs as they aren’t healing on their own so well.”

Zayn had been totally quite since he came back with the food. Perrie had tried to talk to him, but he only nodded or shook his head.

“Mr. Payne, may I talk to you in the hall?” Kara asked.

“Uh, Ok…” He followed her out and they walked down the hall a little before she turned to him and looked up sadly.

“Ok so here’s the deal. MG’s kneecap is shattered. It will heal without surgery, but the chances of her walking again on her own are slim. Surgery would help with those chances but would not eliminate them. You may choose if you would like the surgery but I would not do surgery if I were you because of her age and the chances of it working and her not having to have another surgery are about 1 in 9 million.

“You could go ahead and do the surgery, but she will probably need a few more before she turns 21, like one every 3 years or something. Without the surgery, she will probably have 5 months of therapy and at least 3 of recovery. Your choice.”

Liam had slid down to sit on the floor. He had his head in his hands and was shaking his head. Kara leaned down and put her hand on his shoulder.

“You don’t have to decide right now. Think about it and maybe talk it over with her. You have a day.”

“Thanks,” Liam said, his voice shaky.

“I have to go, but I will see you tomorrow.”

“Thanks Kara.” He looked up and smiled.

“Goodnight Liam.” She walked away and Liam got up. So either he had to watch his daughter suffer through not being able to walk or suffer through surgery and then possibly not being able to walk.

He walked back to the room and looked at his little girl. She was asleep and looked peaceful for once. Her leg had a hard cast from her upper thigh to lower calf. Her arm had a plaster cast around it from her shoulder to her wrist. It was bent a little at the elbow and her arm was resting on the rail of the bed. Through the hospital gown, he could see the thing that had been put on her ribs to set them. It looked cold and hard.

“Liam?” Niall asked. He walked over to Liam rested his hands gently on his hips. “What did the nurse say?” he asked softly. Liam twisted his head to look in his eyes and smiled sadly. A tear leaked out the corner of his eye and Niall wiped it away softly. “What did she say baby?” Liam turned around, gave Niall a hug, and then whispered into his hair.

“Surgery or no surgery. Either way, she probably won’t walk on her own ever again.”

“Are you serious?” Niall asked calmly.

“Yes. We have to decide by the time Kara comes in tomorrow,” he sobbed.
